General Purpose

Under the general direction of the Parks, Recreation and Trails Director, is responsible for the safe and efficient management of aquatic operations at the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center, coordinates and implements various recreational and aquatic based programs, trains, schedules and supervises aquatics staff, and assists in the cleaning and maintenance practices of the facility and pools.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received: The Aquatic Manager works under the general supervision of the Parks, Recreation and Trails Director.

Supervision Exercised: The Aquatic Manager provides general and close supervision of Lifeguards and Aquatic Instructors.

Essential Functions

The Aquatic Manager must be able to perform all Lifeguard I, II & III tasks and the essential tasks required by this position, including but not limited to:

  • Accomplish performance goals established with the Parks, Recreation and Trails Director. Attending regularly scheduled departmental meetings.
  • Comply with and promote safety regulations and best practices according to federal, state, county, local and organizational requirements.
  • Hire, train and certify lifeguard and aquatic instructional staff. Hold regular in-service trainings that meet or exceed organizational requirements. Perform regular and random audits to ensure appropriate practices are being followed and in preparation for emergency scenarios.
  • Directly supervise lifeguards and aquatic instructors. Train to and enforce department rules, regulations, work methods and procedures. Evaluate and manage performance of staff.
  • Schedule aquatic staff to ensure appropriate oversight of all activities. Review and approve timecards in a timely fashion.
  • Plan, develop, conduct, and oversee the emergency action plan coordination for all staff within the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center facility and emergency services. Respond to emergencies.
  • Plan, promote, and implement aquatic programming including lap swim, open swim, swim lessons, water fitness classes, summer camp, and events according to community and seasonal needs in an effective and efficient manner. Regularly survey users to ensure satisfaction and improve outcomes.
  • Communicate regularly with the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center Front Desk staff to ensure smooth operations and effective communication with the community. Assist in ensuring the website and social media accounts are up to date.
  • Plan, coordinate and assist with cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance practices for all areas within the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center facility, including pools, pool decks, offices, locker rooms, restrooms, gym, multi-purpose rooms, front desk, and storage rooms.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all safety equipment and facilities. Coordinate improvements as needed.
  • In coordination with Facilities Staff, maintains pool chemicals and pool filtering equipment in a safe operating range. Maintain pool cleanliness, ensuring clean and clear water, tiles, filters, and gutters with use of specialized equipment and products.
  • Maintain proper records and reports as required. Assist in evaluating medical, rescue and training reports as a quality assurance function.
  • In coordination with the Parks, Recreation and Trails Director, prepare and oversee the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center budget ensuring responsible fiscal practices. Seek out grant and sponsorship opportunities as feasible.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be dressed in proper uniform.
  • Always maintain positive public relations for the facility. Handle patron complaints and/or comments professionally and respectfully as they arise.
  • Set a positive example for other employees to follow.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with some specialized course work in Recreation Management or aquatic curriculum, and
  • Two (2) years Aquatic Experience, and
  • One (1) Year supervisory experience in an aquatic setting, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive and cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including other employees and a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, with a large focus on weekend duties.
  • Perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession, maintain a positive, upbeat, and motivational demeanor.
  • Excellent interpersonal, management, leadership, organizational, programming, and practical fitness skills.
  • Knowledge of water safety and lifeguarding. ability to operate and maintain lifesaving equipment.
  • Knowledge of pool maintenance, equipment, practice, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of aquatic program administration.
  • Ability to understand and apply departmental policies, procedures and protocols, and pertinent local and state regulations relating to lifeguard operations and emergency procedures. and
  • General knowledge of applicable administrative procedures

Special Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Lifeguard Certification and be willing to train for and obtain an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification by hire date or shortly thereafter.
  • Must hold or be willing to train for and obtain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license.
  • Must hold or be willing to train for and obtain an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification.
  • Must be certified in first aid, CPR, and AED.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Various shifts, including early mornings, mid-day, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work occurs in variable weather conditions including warm weather, water, and prolonged exposure to sunlight.
  • Tasks may entail muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, and swimming.
  • Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to performing job requirements.
  • Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.
  • Exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior.

Selection Guidelines

A formal application and résumé are required. finalists will interview with the appropriate hiring authority as designated by the city council. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check, and upon employment, must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
