ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

Note: Governing Collective Bargain Agreement expires on June 30, 2024. Wages subject to any newly- negotiated GWI increases.
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under the supervision of the City Engineer or designee performs professional work involving the development of engineering plans, designs and specifications and inspections for public works projects, along with other types of engineering and construction management projects. Work is performed in the field and office involving but not limited to the inspection of storm and sanitary sewer installations, house connections, curbs, sidewalks, roads, etc. Utilizes surveying and drafting instruments in the field or office. Employees are responsible for the application of technical knowledge in the formation and preparation of inspection reports and progress estimates during construction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management or a related field AND one (1) year of work experience in the field of civil engineering, surveying, construction management or inspection; OR An Associate’s degree in engineering, construction management or a related field or at least sixty (60) credits towards a BS degree in engineering, construction management or a related field AND at least three (3) years of work experience in the field of civil engineering, surveying, construction management or inspection; OR An Associate’s degree and five (5) years of work experience in the field of civil engineering, surveying, construction management or inspection; OR Graduation from a high school or vocational school AND eight (8) years of work experience in the field of civil engineering,surveying, construction management or inspection. Possession of a valid State of Connecticut motor vehicle driver’s license is required.
Note: Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Level IV Certification in Transportation/Highway construction from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) OR a Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Land Surveyor (LS) license issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection AND/OR have experience in surveying and civil engineering field, construction and inspections of sanitary sewers, storm drains, and/or road drains.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: Oral Board panel interview weighted 100% and AUTOCAD performance examination (Pass/Fail). Candidates must achieve an overall passing score of at least 70% to be placed on the hiring list.
