Under the general supervision of the Shift/Unit Commander or Sergeant, the Community Services Officer (CSO) is responsible for providing operational support tasks related to crime prevention, community problem solving, and law enforcement. This position will complete clerical and administrative duties of sworn personnel, and respond to low-priority complaints about abandoned vehicles, animals, found property, and other issues not requiring the response of a sworn officer. The CSO position will also assist sworn officers with crash and crime scenes, as needed.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   1. Operates a vehicle during both day and night; in congested traffic and on road conditions affected by fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.
  2. Investigates animal complaints, including animal bites, and enforces ordinances including the impoundment of unsecured animals and authorizing the release of animals when claimed by the respective owners.
  3. Provides traffic direction and control for accidents, disabled vehicles and road hazards.
  4. Recovers, secures, processes, and returns property and evidence. 
  5. Investigates and completes forms for various minor complaints.
  6. Cleans department vehicles, coordinates vehicle maintenance with the Fleet department, maintains supplies, and delivers vehicles and equipment to the maintenance division for repairs and maintenance.
  7. Assists with special events and parades.
  8. Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
  9. Assists with municipal court security.
  10. Assists with fingerprinting citizens.
  11. Operates department computers.  Dictates, types, and writes reports, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
  12. Engages in functions that include working different shifts, and walking foot patrol. 
  13. Reads, comprehends, and enforces legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents such as citations.
  14. Performs all lawful special projects, assignments, and other job duties as prescribed by the Chief of Police or their designee.
Minimum Education and Experience
The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position
  1. At least eighteen (18) years of age.
  2. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Enrolled with and attending an accredited college six (6) months prior to applying.
  4. Successfully pass a background investigation with fingerprinting, medical examination, and drug screening.
  5. Possess a valid state-issued Driver’s License.
Other Qualifications

  1. Enrolled in a criminal justice, police, science, or closely related field to law enforcement.

  2. Ability to understand and apply state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinance to ensure compliance with all work practices
  3. Ability to demonstrate integrity, honesty, initiative, and respect while maintaining strict confidentiality in all aspects of work
  4. Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to a supervisor.
  5. Ability to maintain a valid, state-issued driver’s license.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City appointed and elected officials, City employees, other governmental agencies, vendors, and the general public.
  7. Ability to exhibit exceptional professionalism, tact, and decorum in all areas of work duties.
  8. Ability to be reliable, timely, and proactive in the completion of duties, meeting deadlines, and responding to inquiries
Work hours and schedule will be dependent on department need and will be established by the Chief of Police or their designee. Accommodations will be made for attending school.
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, with possible exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and other environmental factors. Some indoor work is also necessary.
  • Work will involve contact with the public, requiring effective communication and professional conduct.
  • Work will involve exposure to stressful situations, deadlines, or conflict resolution.
  • Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop, and regularly lift objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Work requires extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Work will involve operating standard office equipment (computer, telephone, copier, etc.).
  • Vision and hearing are required to perform essential functions and communicate effectively.
