Paraprofessional work providing support services for police officers.
Work involves nearly all duties as performed by police officers. The most important difference between the Police Officer and the Public Service Aide is in the area of enforcement. Public Service Aides are civilian employees with no enforcement powers. Academic training covers nearly all areas that the BLE classes contain.

Submits supplementary reports, directs traffic, assists the Fire Department, and responds to, locates and notifies upon completion of calls.
Participates in special details such as school crossings, transporting witnesses, and processing crime scenes.
Writes up various types of document reports; writes up missing persons reports and runaway juvenile incidents.
Assists a police officer in any non-hazardous situations and responds to any request for help.
Investigates motor vehicle accidents, writes accident reports and issues accident summons, if successfully completed the STEP training course.
STEP trained PSAs handle reports and investigation of hit and run accidents.
Runs checks on tags and carries message sheets of the subject is not present.
Responds to accidental injuries, dog bite calls, etc.
Assesses premises on burglary scenes and provides residents and business owners or staff with safety advice to prevent further burglaries.
If assigned to the Prisoner Processing Unit, processes prisoners by photographing and fingerprinting them; generates and maintains a local criminal data file on all prisoners.
If assigned to the Communications Unit, operates an emergency telephone switchboard receiving city calls; enters the calls for service in CAD system; and provides routine information to the public upon request.
Performs other related work as required.

SELECTION STEPS: In addition to meeting the initial minimum requirements listed above and passing the written examination, all applicants may be subject to the successful completion of the following criteria to be considered for appointment: A stringent background investigation including Criminal Records Check; Fingerprint Check; Polygraph examination; Driving Record Check; toxicology screening and a post-offer medical examination.

Credential evaluation reports showing the United States equivalency for academic credentials earned in other countries may be provided by:

- A current member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE), OR
- A recognized Professional Organization

Selection Preference for City Residents: In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview:
