This is specialized responsible professional supervisory work in the coordination and instruction of therapeutic recreation programs and events for the Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion Division of the Parks and Recreation Department.

 

Work involves the design, application, and development of activities based on objectives and procedures designed to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities within the community. An employee in this classification will market, implement, and evaluate community sports, leisure, and recreation programs and events for individuals with disabilities. The employee will be responsible for planning and participating in sports, recreation, and leisure programs such as, Special Olympics, wheelchair sports, swimming, sailing and other outdoor and indoor activities. Supervises subordinate personnel engaged in the conduct/instruction of special programs for individuals with disabilities. This position reports to the Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion Division’s Program Coordinator who reviews work completed through observations, meetings, reports, and correspondence and on-site visits.

Develops, monitors, and evaluates sports, recreation, and/or leisure programs for individuals with disabilities. Assists in the implementation of programs and special events. Promotes programs and assists in fundraising activities.

 

Develops, monitors, and evaluates inclusion related practices department wide to ensure required access to programs and services are provided to the maximum extent possible, when requests for accommodations are made.

 

Monitors, evaluates, and reports on the progress of participants in recreation programs administered by the Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion Division of the Parks and Recreation Department and ensures quality evaluation.


Coordinates, facilitates or attends inclusionary and related topics trainings for the Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion Division and the Parks and Recreation Department including providing educational mentorship to staff/volunteers.

 

Conducts research in the community for the development of sports, recreation, and leisure activities and events for individuals with disabilities.

 

Plans and conducts events and activities for groups of individuals with disabilities that include Special Olympics, wheelchair sports, arts and crafts, aquatics, nature study, and/or other related specialized activities.

 

Keeps and maintains records. Adheres to specific guidelines for programs that are under specific service requirements. Monitors and establishes objectives, guidelines, and office procedures pertaining to therapeutic recreation programs.  

 

Performs maintenance activities to prevent equipment malfunction and maintain a clean and orderly facility. Procures materials and equipment necessary for the conduct of sports/recreation/leisure programs.

 

Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of subordinates.  

 

Performs liaison functions of an administrative nature between Program Coordinator, and staff, department administrators, Florida Department of Health, Florida Department of Children and Families, the community, etc.

 

Provides information and assists with the submission of required documentation for the implementation of grants or governmental entities which involves billings for services provided and ensures compliance with applicable procedures and standards.

 

Monitors the monthly revenue from governmental entities that may fund specialized programs and/or private pay participants and follows up with necessary corrections.    

Coordinates inventory and requisitions supplies and maintenance of equipment as needed.

 

Maintains and monitors attendance records.

 

Prepares reports and correspondence as required.

 

Operates City vehicles as needed.

 

Performs related work as required.

Must have a valid Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification or meet the requirements for certification via academic path. 

A Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate and a Standard First Aid Certificate, issued by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized certifying agency, are required at time of application and must be maintained valid throughout employment in this classification. 

A valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) is required at time of appointment and must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and maintained valid throughout employment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

If not currently certified, an employee must be able to obtain the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification prior to the end of the probationary period and maintain it valid throughout employment in the classification.


SPECIAL NOTE:

Must be willing to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and out of town (travel) for special sporting events.

 

Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening(s).

1.     Copy of a valid Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification or meet the requirements for certification via academic path in the form of  a Bachelor's Degree (stating the academic major) and/or transcripts detailing academic path with the required coursework in Therapeutic RecreationForeign diplomas/degrees must be submitted with an approved credential evaluation agency*. Translations of diploma/degrees are not accepted. If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts indicating the following must be submitted: student's name, school name, number of credits, degree completion, and major.  Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.

Selection Preference for City Residents: In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview:

B. Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued I.D.
C. Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission
D. Properly executed valid lease agreement
