This position performs telecommunications work in the operation of radio transmitting and telephone equipment and other automated systems to dispatch and communicate with mobile public safety units and the public.

NOTE: 
 
 Starting pay incentive will be applied based on experience, certifications and qualifications.
 
 Shift differential:  $0.75 Afternoon Shift

                             $1.00  Midnight Shift

 

Accreditation Performance Incentive: $750.00 Every Three months contingent on case evaluation compliance scores. 

 

Dual dispatch premium: 6% upon being certified and qualified to dispatch both Police and Fire calls.


 Second Language Pay: Equal to 2% of biweekly base pay.


  • Maintain location and status of units, given the resources available other agency and utilizing the systems and equipment in the public safety communications center, so that the current availability, status, and safety of all deployable resources is known.
  • Monitors public safety radio systems, given equipment used by the agency, so that information requiring action is identified. 
  • Monitor electronic data systems, given equipment used by the agency, so that information requiring action is identified.
  • Determine the priority of a service request, given information provided by other telecommunicators or field units and the agency policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols, so that the priority of the request is defined.
  • Validate incident information, given a request for service, available resources, and agency policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols, so that an appropriate response is determined and resources allocation prepared. 
  • Operation of systems and aids provided in the public safety communications center for call prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Utilizes nonverbal communications, given a request for service through a communications device, so that accurate information regarding the request is obtained.
  • Application of basic language and writing skills, interpreting and condensing information, basic computer skills, keyboarding, mousing, typing skills, legible handwriting.
  • Determine incomplete, conflicting, or inconclusive information or data, given agency policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols, and resources, so that an allocation of resources is selected.
  • Notify correct personnel about addition, deletion, and correction of data, given agency policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols, so that documents, files, databases, maps, and resources lists are accurately maintained. 
  • Relay instructions, information, and directions to the service requester, given agency policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols, so that information appropriate to the incident is consistent with agency policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols, and results in resolution, referral, or response.
  • Gather supplemental information, given a service request, so that current information is evaluated, prioritized, and relayed to response units or other personnel and agencies as needed.
  • Provides Emergency Medical, Fire and Police Dispatch pre-arrival instructions as needed.
  • Responds to emergency back-up center as needed and during times of natural disaster.
  • Maintains continued communication with personnel for the duration of incidents.
  • Performs equipment tests regularly.
  • Relay information to other public safety telecommunications personnel or entities, given processed data, so that accurate information regarding the request for service is provided.
  • Performs simple cleaning and maintenance on work station, computer, and other equipment.
  • Assists in the training of other PSCD personnel.
  • Assists in the coordination of evacuations in the event of hurricanes and other major events.
  • Receives and relays telephone calls from the public and others regarding requests for police and fire assistance of both emergency and non-emergency nature.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Two year degree OR one (1) year of experience relevant to the major duties/essential functions of the position. Part-time experience will be prorated.
  • Possession of Certification in FCIC/NCIC (Florida Crime Information Center) within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Must be able to type 35 correct w.p.m.
  • Must be able to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Must pass an extensive criminal background check.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida (within 30 days of employment for non- Florida residents) for the type of vehicle or equipment operated with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred:
  • Three (3) years of experience relevant to the major duties/essential functions of the position. Part-time will be prorated.
  • Direct experience dispatching police/fire.
  • Experience in a police and/or fire rescue emergency dispatch center, police aide work, explorer program and/or college level course work in criminal justice, telecommunications or related field preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • APCO Telecommunicator Certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in a communications center.

  • Reports to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach.
 
For technical professional, supervisory and managerial positions
