POSITION: Prevention & Wellness Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Board of Health – Office of Prevention and Outreach

HOURS OF WORK: Full-time (35 hours/week) Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8:30am – 4:30pm; Wednesday 8:30 am - 7:30 pm; Friday 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. May be required to work outside of normal business hours at night or on weekends, as required.

SALARY: $64,000 - $74,000 (Non-Union) (GRANT FUNDED)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Prevention & Wellness Coordinator is responsible for managing substance use prevention and youth development initiatives in Medford. The role includes overseeing multiple grants, coordinating coalition and school-based efforts, engaging partners, and ensuring fidelity to evidence-based strategies.

SUPERVISION: The Medford Prevention & Wellness Coordinator is an employee of the city of Medford Board of Health’s Office of Outreach & Prevention. The coordinator reports to the Regional Prevention Strategist and the Office of Outreach and Prevention Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Medford Behavioral Health Force’s Medford Connects Prevention Coalition monthly meetings and biannual community forums.
  • Coordinate the Medford Partnerships for Success (PFS) Grant, ensuring deliverables, timelines, and evaluation strategies are met.
  • Oversee the City of Medford’s YouthWorks Grant, including recruiting, screening, and hiring youth; coordinating placements with city departments and local businesses; and supporting participants and supervisors.
  • Organize Youth Action Team meetings at the Middle School(s) and Highschool, providing education, guidance, and support to in-school advisors.
  • Implement prevention strategies across schools and the community, ensuring fidelity to Gambling Prevention Initiatives, Michigan Model, Catch My Breath, iDecide, and other evidence-based curricula.
  • Provide training and technical assistance for educators, school staff, and community partners on prevention best practices.
  • Develop workshops and materials for caregivers to strengthen youth-adult communication and family-based prevention strategies.
  • Conduct needs assessments, track trends (e.g., vaping and substance use), and analyze data including YRBS results and school discipline records.
  • Work with evaluators to measure program effectiveness and prepare progress reports for funders, stakeholders, and city leadership.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with schools, city departments, and at least five community-based organizations to expand prevention programming.
  • Support sustainability efforts by helping to develop long-term funding strategies and policies that integrate prevention into schools and city systems.
  • Create outreach and communication materials to engage youth, caregivers, and the community in prevention initiatives.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, education, social work, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience in program coordination, youth substance use prevention, or community outreach.
  • Strong ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders, including school administrators, community leaders, and public health professionals.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based prevention strategies and youth development frameworks.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and data analysis skills.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Candidates will be proficient in coalition building/organizing, working in communities, working with volunteers, program development, and project management.
  • Experience working with communities is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent community engagement, relationship-building, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to inform program development and decision-making.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience coordinating multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and data visualization tools.

Preferred

  • Working knowledge in MA. General Laws pertaining to the procurement of goods and services.
  • Ability to maintain records and to keep records and information in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with people.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, program participants, community leaders, the media, and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this position, an employee is regularly required to sit, talk or hear, in person and by telephone, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment, (such as calculators, copiers, typewriters, fax and personal computers) and reach with hands and arms. Moderate physical effort required when conducting field duties under typical conditions. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.

Work Environment

Standard indoor office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
