Position Schedule: Position is assigned a 9/80 work schedule that provides for one day off every other week., shift hours are 6:30 – 4:00pm. Position is part of the Water Utility division’s after hours on call coverage responsibilities.
This position performs journey level work in the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and servicing of grounds, facilities, right-of-ways, and infrastructure. This is the journey level position requiring some technical knowledge. Positions in this class perform a variety of maintenance activities and other duties related to repair, construction, or preventive maintenance of the water system. Work is performed within established procedures with individual judgment limited to proper handling of, and minor changes to, accepted routine. Although the position may operate independently, supervision or guidance is readily available, and the incumbents’ work is frequently reviewed.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Inspects, maintains, and services municipal utilities, including but not limited to water pump stations, water reservoirs, water mains, well sites, fire hydrants, electrical switching facilities, telemetry system, and all valves such as PRV, rate of flow, altitude, pressure relief/sustaining, blow-off, and air/vacuum release.
- Reports observed or suspected cross-connections and unauthorized connections to supervisor.
- Reports building maintenance needs. Performs work that is minor and limited in scope and duration, as directed.
- Performs maintenance programs including directional flushing, valve exercising, hydrant maintenance, well inspection/testing and reservoir maintenance per job standards.
- Installs, inspects, maintains, repairs, and services municipal utilities, facilities, or equipment as assigned.
- Effectively maintains and updates files, maps, and other records, related to installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of municipal facilities or utilities; submits work orders.
- Operates assigned equipment, makes minor field repairs and adjustments; reports need for major repair to supervisor.
- Assists with public utility locates as assigned.
- Responds to customer inquiries and requests.
- May oversee the work of workers assigned to crew.
- May be assigned to other divisions performing work requiring similar skills during times of peak work loads, manpower shortage, public emergency, or other times when critical work needs to be completed.
A combination of the experience, education, and training listed below which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of this position.
Experience:
- Three years of experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position or a related position in utility maintenance or construction.
Education and Training:
- High school diploma or GED.
Licenses or Certificates:
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver’s License.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date:
- class “A” Washington State Commercial Driver’s License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement
- first aid and CPR certifications
- flagger certification
- confined space certification
- Public Operator Pesticide Applicator’s license may be required.
- Competent Person certifications may be required
- AC pipe certification
- Forklift certification
Must possess, or have the ability to possess within eighteen months of hire date, Water Distribution Manager I certification.

This position regularly works outside in various weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and also will sometimes work in hazardous areas under hazardous conditions. The employee occasionally works in traffic, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
This position works a regular schedule, however, incumbents may be called in to work at irregular times in emergency situations.
