Overview
Join our dynamic team as a Maintenance/Operator and become a vital part of our Public Works Department with the City of Lowell.
Responsibilities
- Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
- Demonstrates initiative and works with minimal supervision.
- Operates tractor with backhoe, front end loader and other related equipment (once properly trained).
- Pours concrete, fills pavement potholes with asphalt and shovels and rakes asphalt paving mix in road repair.
- Constructs concrete forms for curbs and gutters and sidewalks and performs tasks in new roadway construction.
- Removes snow and ice from roadways and spreads sand and cinders on icy roadways.
- Works as an unskilled laborer when not working as a Maintenance Worker – Operator I.
- Until the city STEP systems are relieved by sewer, maintain or assist trained personnel with maintenance/installations of STEP systems, as required.
- Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled building maintenance tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education: Education equivalent to the completion of 12th grade. Completion of technical course in heavy equipment operation and maintenance preferred but not mandatory.
Experience: One years related experience; may substitute additional experience for education. Experience time may be substituted by the director or assistant director.
Knowledge of: Construction equipment and safe operating procedures and practices. Basic knowledge of engineering site plan drawings as they relate to topological grade differential, percentage of grade and slope, etc.
Responsibility for: Great responsibility for the care, condition, and use of materials, equipment money, and tools; positively representing the Public Works Department/personnel and the City of Lowell.
Communication Skills: Ability to professionally furnish and obtain information from other departments; requiring tact and judgment to avoid friction; constant contact with the public on matters requiring explanations and discussions; requiring tact and judgment to deal with and influence people; requires a well-developed sense of strategy and timing; ability to deal well with upset and irate people.
Tool, Machine, Equipment Operations: Recall a wide variety of names and faces; requires periodic use of a computer, printer, copier, and telephone system.
Analytical Ability:Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; prioritize task; establish effective working relationships with employees and the public; Ability to apply simple to complex concepts to the solution of problems and performance of assigned duties; work independently with little supervision.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Moderate mental effort is required daily to recall names, faces, voices, documents, etc.; a moderate to heavy amount of pressure and fatigue is present during an average workday; moderate amount of overtime.

Special Requirements
Valid Arkansas State drivers license. Must have or be able to obtain a class B driver license within 90 days. Must have a clean driving record.
