The City of Louisville is now accepting applications for a Wastewater Intern. This position will work within our Public Works Department and support the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a 6 month position.

Under supervision of a certified Chief Plant Operator and/or plant operator, performs entry level work in the operation and minor maintenance of a water treatment facility.  Work involves on-the-job training in the duties of a water treatment plant operator with the intent of increasing familiarization with the operations, terminology, and requirements of this career. The supervisor will provide training, coaching, and instruction about procedures and standards to be followed. Feedback will be provided during 6 month internship to note progress.  

This seasonal intern position is full-time (40 hours per week) and runs from early June through the end of October.

This position requires candidate finalists complete and successfully pass a physical, background and driving record check, and acceptable reference checks prior to employment

  • Participates in an on the job training program involving practical, "hands-on" experience with plant operations.
  • Starts and stops machinery and pumps, regulates valves and observes dials; adds chemicals according to prescribed standards.
  • Performs and/or assists with limited maintenance, minor repairs, and various other tasks; operates, oils, and adjusts machinery.
    Performs cleanup work on equipment; cleans plant interior; performs housekeeping duties such as sweeping and mopping floors, washing windows, painting, and light building maintenance; maintains grounds as required.
  • Assists with additional administrative tasks as needed.
  • Takes measurements such as pH, temperature, alkalinity, and uses meter and gauge readings to determine performance of wastewater treatment processes and equipment.
  • Collects samples of process wastewater influent, effluent and sludge at various stages of processing; runs routine laboratory tests and records the laboratory results.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prefer currently enrolled college student or recent graduate with course work in mathematics, biology, chemistry, or technical training specializing in electrical or mechanical applications.
  • Higher education with an emphasis in water or wastewater is a plus. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to learn to operate and maintain mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to learn mathematics, chemistry and biology.
  • Ability to learn and use a personal computer.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships.
  • Ability to learn the operation of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and/or climb for extended periods.
ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate but on occasion can be loud. The employee is required to climb stairs to reach the top of, and climb down into wastewater storage tanks while performing their job.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, fingers, handle, or feel tools or controls; read, speak and hear; and taste or smell.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and on occasion as much as 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to climb up and down steep ladders and stairs.

OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check, pre-placement physical and possible substance screen prior to employment.
