Overview

Want to spend your summer working outdoors in Louisville’s beautiful Open Space areas, and continue year-round? We are seeking a motivated, hardworking individual to join our Natural Resources team in a part-time capacity (up to 29 hours per week). Term limited to one year.

This position supports habitat management, wildlife monitoring, restoration projects, and environmental education efforts. If you enjoy hands-on fieldwork, teamwork, and contributing to land stewardship, we encourage you to apply.

Preferred Schedule (No Mondays):

  • Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Some weekend work may be required for special events at the supervisor’s request. No regular weekend shifts are scheduled.

Examples of Duties

The Natural Resources Technician assists with a wide range of land management and conservation activities throughout the year.

Seasonal Responsibilities:

Spring/Summer/Fall:

  • Noxious weed control (mapping, monitoring, mowing, clipping, hand-pulling.)
  • Russian olive control.
  • Wildlife monitoring and data collection.
    • Priority focus on prairie dog population monitoring and mapping.
    • Monitoring and documentation of active raptor nests and communications with volunteers.
  • Watering and maintenance of pocket prairie plantings.
  • Assisting and sometimes leading with environmental education programs and volunteer events.
  • Supporting and leading volunteer events and stewardship projects.
  • Data collection and reporting.
  • Other maintenance-related duties may be assigned such as assistance with trash removal.
Winter:
  • Data entry and reporting.
  • Russian olive management.
  • Equipment maintenance and related tasks.

General Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience).
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Ability to maintain a good driving record throughout employment.
  • Must pass a pre-placement physical, background check, reference check, and driving record review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Interpretive Guide.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Ability to identify noxious weed species and native vegetation (training provided if needed).
  • Interest in Natural Resources, Rangeland Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to safely operate:
    • Weed trimmers
    • High-performance articulated all-wheel-drive compact tractors
    • Trailers
    • Toolcat skid steer
    • Miscellaneous hand tools
  • Experience driving trucks and towing trailers.
  • Ability to follow City safety policies and procedures.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collect, record, and report data accurately.

Additional Information

Work Environment:

This position requires extensive outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, snow, wind, and uneven terrain.

Physical Requirements:

  • Hike long distances over uneven terrain.
  • Perform strenuous physical activities including digging, hammering, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, sit, and work outdoors for extended periods.
Other Necessary Requirements:
Successful candidates may be required to complete a pre-placement physical and background investigation prior to employment.
