EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Under supervision, performs a wide variety of entry and journey-level clerical library duties; interfaces with patrons in providing public and technical library services; performs circulation and service desk duties using an automated system to check out and check in library materials, collect fines and fees, and register new borrowers; interprets and resolves questions regarding library circulation policies; receives refunds, reconciles cash, and prepares cash receipt reports; orders and maintains records for library books and materials; assists in routine cataloging of library books and materials; types letters, reports, forms and notices; maintains statistical and other records; operates standard office machines; develops, maintains, and disseminates directory information; assists professional or para-professional staff with program preparation; operates and makes minor repairs to audiovisual equipment; may use book bins, book trucks, and similar equipment; may operate delivery vehicles; may prepare displays and exhibits; may open and close libraries; may interview, select, evaluate, supervise and discipline subordinates (Grade Level III-IV); and performs other related duties as required.

Applicants must meet OPTION A, OPTION B, or OPTION C:
OPTION A: One (1) year of paid, full-time equivalent experience in performing routine clerical and customer service duties in a library system or equivalent customer service environment (e.g., banks, retail, etc.).
OR
OPTION B: Six (6) months of paid, full-time equivalent experience performing routine clerical duties with the City of Long Beach Public Library System.
OR
OPTION C: Completion of twelve (12) college units in library science or a library technician program (proof required)*.
Willingness to work part-time or irregular schedules including evenings and weekends and travel between the various city libraries.
A valid motor vehicle operator's driver’s license, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual/Biliterate skills (Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog) is desired for some positions.

A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)

- Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristic on the form.
