The Public Works Department is now recruiting for the position of Clerk Typist III. This recruitment is anticipated to close on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:59 PM OR when 100 applications are received, whichever occurs first.  We encourage candidates to apply as soon as possible.

The Department of Public Works is seeking a Clerk Typist III-Unclassified to provide direct clerical support for the Superintendent of Clean Team and technical staff.

THE DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting, and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million.   • Interacts with other divisions, bureaus, City departments, the public and outside agencies in person, by telephone or by email.
  • Schedules and assists with preparation for meetings and appointments.
  • Compiles, tracks, and produces reports related to new and existing contractors, reviewing permits, and resident inquires related to current Right-of-Way Construction projects.
  • Assists with clerical/administrative duties to support Division.
  • Types forms, memos, and correspondence.
  • Provides backup support for Bureau secretarial duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to type neatly and accurately at a net speed of 40 words per minute.
  • Ability to file in alphabetical and numerical order.
  • Ability to make simple mathematical computations.
  • Ability to correct errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Two years of paid (full-time equivalent) clerical experience and experience supporting a manager or supervisor.
  • A valid driver’s license, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.

  • Ability to complete assignments independently, accurately, and on time.
  • Excellent planning and time management skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable with respect to changing priorities.
  • Thorough knowledge of office procedures.
  • Exceptional work habits, including punctuality and attendance.
  • Proficient in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and English language skills.
  • Skilled in a wide range of software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Outlook, and database programs such as Access.
