The City of Liberty is looking for YOU to join our team as a Part-Time Bailiff/Detention Officer.

In this role, you will maintain order and security within the City’s municipal courtroom and detention center. You’ll play a vital role in ensuring the safety of court participants, supervising inmates, and supporting the fair and professional execution of legal proceedings. By serving in this capacity, you will directly enhance services to our citizens and confirm that Liberty is the place they choose to grow, play, and live.

The Liberty Police Department is responsible for protecting the safety of our community through enforcement, prevention, and support services. As part of this team, the Bailiff/Detention Officer provides courtroom security, supervises individuals in custody, and assists with detention operations.

 Schedule & Availability Requirements


  • Part-time, flexible schedule, based on the applicant's availability.
  • Municipal Court is held every other week on Tuesday mornings (shift begins at 8:15am) and Wednesday evenings (shift begins at 4:30pm)
  • Applicants are not required to be available for both court days unless they wish to work additional hours. 
  • The work schedule is subject to change based on court operations and staffing needs.
  • Additional hours may be available, as needed, to assist with detention or court-related responsibilities.
  • Open and close court sessions; provide protection for the judge and maintain courtroom safety and decorum.
  • Escort individuals in custody to and from the courtroom; complete booking, fingerprinting, and processing of arrests.
  • Monitor inmate activities, conduct headcounts, perform contraband inspections, and ensure compliance with detention rules.
  • Respond to and manage courtroom disturbances; remove unruly individuals if necessary.
  • Work closely with Court Clerks, Attorneys, and the Municipal Judge to support daily operations.
  • Conduct safety/security checks and oversee video court operations.
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies regarding matters related to municipal court or detention.
  • Proactively support department functions ensuring community needs are met.
  • Pertinent laws, rules, and regulations affecting municipal court and detention operations.
  • Emergency medical techniques, self-defense tactics, and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Professional written and verbal communication standards, including interaction with a diverse population.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and take appropriate action in emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, law enforcement agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, respond effectively to requests and inquiries, and maintain professionalism at all times.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of essential duties and mental capacity for decision-making, teamwork, and customer service.

License or Certificate

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, POST certification in the State of Missouri.
  • One year as a full-time Class “A” sworn officer required.
