The Recreation Specialist performs mid-level work organizing and facilitating recreational programs to ensure customer satisfaction and safety for visitors at the Leander Activity Center, City-sponsored programs, and special events. This job level is moderately complex and requires some work experience. The Recreations Specialist works under moderate supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally loud.

- Assist in ensuring the delivery of high quality and consistent recreation programs, events and services.
- Create media content, including posters, flyers, and other promotional materials, as well as manage social media posts to enhance community engagement and event awareness.
- Assist with maintaining vendor and sponsor relationships for special events, ensuring clear communication and partnership success.
- Organize, facilitate, and instruct programs and special events as approved by the Supervisor, to meet community needs.
- Maintain facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Provide program information in person and via the telephone; greets guests and provides prompt, courteous and friendly customer services to the public, to maintain positive customer relations.
- Assist in coordinating city-wide special events, including event setup and tear down.
- Assist in managing a variety of front desk activities including processing of transactions via cash, check and credit card payment methods; operate computer registration and reservation system.
- May direct the work of trainees and volunteers.
- May be rotated or transferred to other facilities, and/or assignments based on department or seasonal needs; assignments may include the following program areas: recreation programs and events, active adult activities, or aquatics.
- Maintain facility cleanliness and is active in presenting a clean, comfortable and safe environment; responsible for reporting potential and existing safety issues or concerns to supervisors to ensure patron safety.
- Work may include participating in the activities with participants, setting up tables, chairs, tents, and various equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
- High school graduate or its equivalent.
- Minimum of one year of related experience.
- Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as evenings and weekends.
- Valid Driver’s License from any state in the U.S. Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days, per state law.
- First Aid and CPR/AED certification within 90 days of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a related field.
- Two or more years of related experience.
- Learn and understand the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, recreation activity, and recreation services.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens or employees of the organization.
- Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.
- Skill in directing the activities of a complex and diverse organization.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to communicate with other employees and the general public in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
