The Part-Time Recreation Specialist supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreational programs, community events, and public engagement initiatives for the City of League City. The position provides front-line interaction with residents, supports logistics and operational needs, and assists staff in ensuring safe, inclusive, and high-quality recreational experiences.


This role includes two service divisions, Special Events and Adaptive Recreation, each requiring specialized skills to meet community needs.


Special Events Recreation Specialist: This subcategory focuses on supporting City-wide festivals, holiday celebrations, pop-up events, recreational tournaments, and community engagement programs. Responsibilities include event setup and teardown, vendor and volunteer support, participant assistance, crowd-flow facilitation, and helping ensure a safe, welcoming environment for residents and visitors.



Adaptive Recreation Specialist: This subcategory focuses on programs designed for individuals with disabilities or differing abilities. Responsibilities include assisting with inclusive programming, making activity modifications, providing participant support, helping ensure safety and accessibility, and fostering an environment of respect, empowerment, and equal participation.


Due to the nature of these responsibilities, this role is subject to random drug screening under the City's safety-sensitive positions policy.Includes both general duties and subcategory-specific activities as assigned.

  • Creates, implements, and evaluates recreation programs and activities with a primary focus on adaptive programming or special events; researches and recommends program offerings; develops activity timelines; and schedules registration dates and related meetings.
  • Maintain supply inventories, prepare materials, and report equipment or facility concerns.
  • Enters and maintains program information in recreation management software for online and in-house registration; manages waitlists; generates reports; and ensures accurate recordkeeping.
  • Support volunteers, vendors, contract instructors, and community partners during events.
  • Serves as point of contact for recreation staff and programs; training and overseeing seasonal staff; and serving as the point of contact for on-site and off-site facilities.
  • Addresses customer complaints, facility concerns, and custodial or maintenance needs; oversees financial transactions at the front desk; and reconciles income reports at the end of each shift when serving as point of contact.
  • Oversee scheduling of programs and rentals across multiple parks and facilities during point of contact shifts.
  • Assist in the setup, breakdown, cleaning, and safe operation of program areas, facilities, and event spaces.
  • Support participant check-in, registration processes, program tracking, and customer service duties.
  • Monitor participants to ensure safety, rule compliance, and positive engagement.
  • Uphold City policies, safety guidelines, customer service standards, and departmental procedures.
Non-Essential Job Functions
  • Assists with marketing and promotional activities, including distributing flyers, updating bulletin boards, and supporting social media content.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, staff training, and community engagement efforts as needed.
  • Provides support for other recreation programs, events, or facilities during peak periods, staffing shortages, or special activities.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university or two years of college in Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies or a related field.
  • At least three to five years of parks recreation experience.
  • Valid drivers license.
  • For Adaptive Recreation: A minimum of one year of experience working directly with individuals with disabilities or in adaptive recreation, education , or similar programs.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience , which provide the requisite knowledge skills and abilities needed for the position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:(Adaptive Recreation Specialist)

 Education and Certification:

  • Training or certification in adaptive sports, behavioral management, or inclusion facilitation.
  • Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) or equivalent training.

Experience:

  • Two (2) or more years of experience planning, implementing, and evaluating adaptive or inclusive recreation programs for youth and adults with disabilities.
  • Experience supervising staff, volunteers, or part-time instructors in an adaptive recreation setting.
  • Experience developing partnerships with community organizations, schools, or agencies that serve individuals with disabilities.

  • Knowledge of recreation programming principles and positive customer service techniques.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups of participants, parents, vendors, and staff.
  • Ability to follow safety rules, adapt to changing program needs, and problem-solve in real time.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently when required.
  • Ability to lift, move, and transport recreational equipment (typically up to 30–40 lbs.).
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and stand or walk for extended periods.
  • For Adaptive Recreation: ability to learn and apply activity modifications and inclusive practices.

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, carry, push, and pull objects; operate small equipment; verbally communicate with participants and staff; observe program areas for safety; and maintain attention in active, dynamic environments.
Mental functions include the ability to concentrate, make decisions, exercise judgment, follow instructions, and interact respectfully and professionally with participants of various backgrounds and abilities.

Work is performed in recreation centers, community facilities, parks, outdoor venues, special event grounds, and occasionally off-site locations. Environments may include high-activity public areas, exposure to weather, noise, and variable crowds. Indoor work may involve classrooms, gyms, multipurpose rooms, or office settings. The position involves frequent interaction with the public, children, teens, adults, and individuals with disabilities.

Salary : $22,637 - $32,821
