League City Animal Care’s Community Outreach - Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and managing the animal shelter's volunteer program. This position implements community outreach initiatives that support the growth of the volunteer program, the shelter's mission, daily operations, and the public image of the City's Animal Care Center. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between the shelter and volunteers, as well as sharing duties as liaison for community partners, schools, nonprofit organizations, and the general public with the other members of the Community Outreach team.
This position is an active member of the shelter team, working alongside team members to support the daily functions of the shelter and ensure efficient, high-quality service.
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for training volunteers in the safe handling of shelter animals using positive reinforcement techniques and must be comfortable working directly with dogs, cats, and other animals on a daily basis. The Coordinator also trains volunteers on proper kennel cleaning and sanitation procedures, so candidates must be willing to learn and teach approved cleaning and disinfecting protocols.
The Coordinator recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises volunteers while working collaboratively with the other members of the Community Outreach team to coordinate events, increase community engagement, support adoptions, or other programs that support the work of League City Animal Care. This role requires strong organizational and communication skills, the ability to lead and train others, and a passion for animal welfare and community service. Duties and responsibilities may be modified at any time to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage the animal care center's volunteer program, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, retention, and disciplinary action.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers. Share responsibility with Community Outreach team members for communicating with community groups, schools, nonprofits, and partner organizations as assigned.
  • Train volunteers in safe animal handling techniques, including proper restraint, movement, enrichment, and the use of positive reinforcement techniques and Fear Free/Low Stress handling methods.
  • Train volunteers on proper kennel cleaning, sanitation, and disinfecting procedures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for animals and staff.
  • Coordinate volunteer assignments to support animal care, enrichment, adoption events, fundraising activities, customer service, and other community initiatives.
  • Ensure volunteers comply with City policies, safety standards, animal handling procedures, and sanitation protocols.
  • Monitor volunteer performance, address concerns, and implement corrective action or dismissal when necessary.
  • Assist with adoption promotions, public engagement campaigns, and shelter marketing efforts in coordination with Animal Care staff and other Community Outreach team members.
  • Maintain accurate records related to volunteer hours, training, participation, and program outcomes.
  • Prepare reports, statistics, and documentation related to outreach and volunteer program effectiveness.
  • Support public-facing animal care center operations by providing courteous and professional customer service.
  • Assist with emergency or disaster-related animal response efforts involving volunteers as appropriate.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience in volunteer coordination, community outreach, public engagement, nonprofit work, animal welfare, or a related field; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • One (1) year of experience, volunteer or paid, working in a hands-on role with domestic animals.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in communications, public administration, nonprofit management, animal science, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an animal shelter or animal welfare organization.
  • Experience planning community events
  • Experience in training volunteers and managing volunteer programs
  • Experience using positive reinforcement and Fear Free animal handling techniques.
  • Experience teaching or enforcing animal care sanitation 
 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of volunteer program management principles and community outreach strategies.
    • Demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate, and communicate with large and diverse groups.
    • Knowledge of animal welfare concepts and shelter operations preferred.
    • Skill in public speaking, presentation delivery, and community engagement.
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
    • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift or carry materials up to 25 pounds as needed for events and activities.
