Citywide Intern

The Intern position provides a structured learning and development opportunity for individuals seeking practical experience in municipal government operations. Interns will support departmental staff by assisting with administrative, technical, and operational tasks while gaining exposure to public service functions. Assignments are designed to enhance professional skills, encourage civic engagement, and provide insight into local government processes.

Interns may rotate across departments or be assigned to a specific department based on organizational needs, educational background, and career interests. This position emphasizes learning, collaboration, and contribution to meaningful projects that benefit the community. Duties may vary significantly depending on departmental placement and organizational priorities. Duties and responsibilities may be modified at any time to meet the needs of the organization.

• Provide general administrative support including data entry, filing, document preparation, and records management.
• Assist with research, data analysis, and report preparation for departmental projects.
• Support customer service functions by responding to inquiries in person, by phone, or electronically.
• Participate in special projects, community initiatives, or departmental programs.
• Attend meetings, trainings, and workshops as assigned.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Perform basic clerical and operational tasks to support daily departmental functions.
• Collaborate with team members and contribute to a positive work environment.
• Follow all City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Interns may be assigned to one or more of the following City departments:

• City Manager’s Office: Exposure to executive leadership, strategic initiatives, and policy development.
• Human Resources: Recruitment support, onboarding processes, and employee engagement initiatives.
• Finance: Budget analysis, accounts payable/receivable support, and financial reporting.
• Public Works: Infrastructure projects, field data collection, and operational logistics.
• Parks & Recreation: Program coordination, event planning, and community outreach.
• Information Technology (IT): Technical support, system maintenance, and cybersecurity awareness.
• Planning & Development: Zoning, permitting processes, and urban planning projects.
• Communications/Public Affairs: social media, marketing campaigns, and public information dissemination.
• Engineering: Support for capital improvement projects, plan review, data collection, and infrastructure design activities.
• Project Management: Assistance with project tracking, scheduling, coordination, and reporting for City initiatives.
• Economic Development: Support business outreach efforts, research market trends, assist with development initiatives, and contribute to programs that promote economic growth.

• Enrollment in a college or university program in public administration, business, communications, engineering, or a related field.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office or similar software.
• Willingness to learn and adapt in a professional work environment.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Relevant coursework or experience may substitute for formal education where applicable.
