Summary:
The City of Lawrence, Kansas City Attorney’s Office is seeking a motivated and detail oriented law student to join our team for the summer. This internship provides hands on experience in municipal law, including research, drafting, policy analysis, and exposure to a broad range of legal issues affecting City government, with oversight by attorneys.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct legal research on municipal, state, and federal law.
• Assist attorneys drafting memoranda, ordinances, resolutions, and correspondence.
• Assist attorneys with Kansas Open Records Act requests.
• Observe and support litigation, code enforcement, and public meeting processes.
• Participate in internal meetings and cross departmental projects.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the work of the office.
Qualifications:
• Completion of at least two years of law school from an accredited law school by the start of the internship.
• Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism.
• Interest in public service, local government, or administrative law.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Hours:
15-30 Hours Per Week. Work location is primarily at City Hall located at 6 East Sixth Street, Lawrence, Kansas with the option to add work from home days later in the internship. The work schedule is flexible, but will be between 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.
Compensation:
This is a paid internship. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and budget availability.
