What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solid Waste Operator 500 position at City of Lansing?
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Operates a motorized vehicle up to 35 feet in length, of either the recycle or refuse packer model, while standing inside the driver’s cab which is located on the right side of the vehicle.
Picks up refuse bags and bundles of yard waste and deposits materials in the side of the vehicle.
Picks up City recycle carts and empties them in the side of the packer.
Picks up City refuse carts and empties them in the side of the packer.
May operate a bulk item collection truck which requires the ability to lift and move furniture, appliances and other large items.
Washes and cleans vehicles daily, inside and out.
Participates in a preventative maintenance program by maintaining packers and other solid waste vehicles.
Completes daily log, trip and inspection sheets by recording hand-written information regarding work activities.
Ideal candidates will possess:
High School Diploma or GED
One (1) year of experience performing heavy manual labor tasks
One (1) year of experience operating a packer truck preferred
Special Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver’s License, Group B, with Air Brakes
MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training
May require overtime or shift work for snow and ice control operations and other emergencies
Ability to pass the Solid Waste training program within forty-five (45) days
This position requires the operation of a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or more. Therefore, pursuant to Section 601a of the Michigan Vehicle Code, the applicant recommended for this position must be able to pass the physical examination mandated by the State of Michigan in order to be transferred or hired for this position.
