The City of Lansing is seeking a qualified and motivated Grounds Supervisor to join our Operations and Maintenance Division. The ideal candidate will have at least four years of experience in public works, specifically in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets. We are looking for an individual with strong communication skills and a solid understanding of the equipment, tools, materials, and techniques used in street maintenance operations. A well-rounded knowledge of related areas—such as grounds maintenance, winter operations, refuse collection, sewer systems, and urban forestry or horticulture—is highly desirable. The successful candidate will also possess specialized experience in supervising and evaluating street maintenance work, as well as a thorough understanding of applicable laws, ordinances, safety practices, and regulations.

- MustpossessandmaintainavalidStateofMichiganDriver’s License
- MustpossessAFO (Aquatic Facility Operators) license, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
- Must possess State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Core license, Categories 3A (turfgrass), 3B (ornamentals) and 6 (right-of-way), or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
- Must possess Playground Safety Inspection Certification, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
- High School Diploma or GED required, Associate Degree highly preferred.
- Four (4) years of park maintenance experience which includes work in landscaping operations, carpentry, masonry, and excavation work.
- One (1) year of supervisory experience where work direction was given to others in a public works environment, discipline provided as needed, daily crew sheets and timecards submittals, and granting time off for staff.
Specialized Knowledge Functions Include but are not limited to:
- Supervises the maintenance and repair of a wide range of outdoor facilities, to include landscaping, pools, playgrounds, docks, timber structures, block structures, picnic tables, athletic fields, BMX tracks, fences, trails, shelters, public restrooms, gardens, andirrigation
- Assigns equipment and coordinates repair or rental as required
- Supervises integrated pest management program for decreasing chemical dependence of grounds, and intergrades this effort with otherprograms
- Provides chemical safety training documents including “Right-to-Know”provisions
- Coordinates City wide mowing and turf maintenance for Parks and Right of Way
- Oversee operations of pools and ensure proper chemical and mechanical operations and maintenance
- Inspects play structures, ensures proper maintenance and compliance with safetystandards
- Supervises the snow removal of city-owned sidewalks, river trails, parks and community centers.
- Supervises and coordinates with other departments to ensure needs are met for all special events that take place in the parks.
- May oversee cemetery operations and supervision as needed
