JOB SUMMARY
A Property Evidence Technician for the Lakewood Police Department is a safety sensitive position, exercising a high degree of accuracy, discretion, trust and confidence. The primary functions of this position are to receive, record, secure and store property and evidence as well as record and document the chain of custody of all property and evidence. Additional responsibilities include assisting Agents and Detectives with investigative requests and answering internal and external customer inquiries over the telephone, front counter and property release window. Transports evidence to/from laboratories and court, prepares and conducts evidence views with investigators and attorneys, maintains inventory of property and evidence, and performs relocation and release and destruction of property and evidence in accordance with law, policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Responsible for intake, booking, safe storage, handling, and disposition of property and evidence. Items can potentially be large, bulky, oversized and/or heavy.
  • Follows department and judicial district procedures and guidelines, as well as all applicable laws in the maintenance and disposition of property and evidence.
  • Responsible for owner notification of personal property available for release.
  • Data entry of pertinent information and notes as it relates to property and evidence.
  • Orders property and evidence supplies as needed.
  • Coordinates and completes destruction of illicit drugs and controlled substances.
  • Conducts an annual inventory of property and evidence.
  • Responsible for review and update of evidence disposition notices.
  • Testifies in court cases as directed by subpoenas.
  • Transports evidence to/from various laboratories for analysis (includes transportation of biohazards and potentially hazardous chemicals).
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • Twelve or more months of general office experience with emphasis on customer service, data entry, and task or activity planning and coordination.

Certification/Licenses/Specialist Training

  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Ability to become NCIC/CCIC certified within six-months of hire
  • Ability to become a notary public if requested by supervision
  • Ability to become a Certified Forklift Operator within six-months of hire
  • Ability to operate a vehicle
  • Ability to successfully pass the following:
    • Attention to Detail Computer test
    • Polygraph examination
    • Psychological examination
    • Oral board and/or telephone interview
    • Background investigation
    • Driving history evaluation
    • Criminal history evaluation
    • Reference checks
    • Urinalysis drug test
    • Pre-placement physical examination

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Comprehension

Must be able to comprehend and apply policies, procedures, federal, state, and local laws and City ordinances and interpret and apply those regulatory requirements to a multitude of work activities.

Must be able to follow supervisor’s oral and written instructions and complete assignments in a satisfactory and timely manner.

Language Ability

Must be able to speak and write the English language clearly and concisely to communicate with callers/visitors, police personnel and co-workers and to provide testimony in court.

Reasoning

Ability to apply good judgment and decision-making on a daily basis and respond effectively to changing conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position combines daily duties at approximately 50% in the office and 50% at an off-site warehouse.

  • Work assignments involve daily responsibility for firearms, money, and controlled substances.
  • Physically demanding tasks are present handling and transportation of property and evidence on a daily basis.
  • Occasional contact with potentially combative, verbally abusive, hostile and uncooperative customers.
  • Experiences time related burdens due to deadlines and heavy workload.
  • Work involves exposure to hazardous chemicals, distasteful and unpleasant odors, and biohazards.

Pay Range

$27.66-$35.96
