Essential Functions:

  • Reads water meter dials.
  • Connects and disconnects water meters.
  • Records readings.
  • Monitors compound dials to verify proper operation.
  • Monitors meters for damage, tampering, broken seals, and insulation.
  • Writes troubleshooting reports and communicates meter problems to other departments.
  • Reviews extremely high or low readings and informs billing clerk of problems.
  • Re-checks readings to determine abnormal consumption patterns.
  • Analyzes possible causes for consumption fluctuations.
  • Inspects for water leaks.
  • Trims brush, trees, and shrubs from water meters.
  • Excavates water boxes around meters.
  • Sprays for bees in water boxes to provide safe access to meter dials.
  • Performs repeat visits to inaccessible meters.
  • Provides keys for meter rooms or newly installed meters.
  • Responds to customer requests for reading verification.
  • Assists other departments in locating meters.
  • Washes, fuels, and completes general maintenance checklist as provided by fleet services for city vehicle
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must have valid GA Driver’s license with good driving history.
  • High school education or GED (preferred); and some experience and/or training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos. Able to write and print numbers legibly. Ability to communicate verbally.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
  • Occasionally works outside of normal business hours.
  • Working knowledge of data entry. Must not disclose confidential information to which employee is infrequently exposed.
  • Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform mental math involving addition, subtraction on decimals and record arithmetic computations accurately and quickly.
  • Ability to accurately read and record data from various type of meter dials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Ability to establish successful working relationships; Ability to work with angry or difficult customers.
  • Ability to use shovels, Sledge hammers, brush cutters, "T" bars, "Water Rod", pencils or micro computing devices, hand tools, portable, or mobile radio.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is required to sit while driving, and enter and exit vehicle frequently.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
