What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal Planner position at CITY OF KILLEEN?
Principal Planner
Work involves developing and updating local plans and ordinances to implement local, regional and/or state and federal policy and programs, developing procedures for implementing these plans or programs.
The employee will have the responsibility of:
- Performing planning functions related to current and long-range comprehensive planning and municipal development, land use management, economic development, urban development, comprehensive growth, annexation, and special projects as assigned
- Assisting in the preparation of agenda materials for the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council
- Consulting and coordinating with other City departments, external agencies, and civic groups in furthering interest and/or action regarding a plan, program, or project
- Developing and writing ordinances and amendments for consideration by the governing body
- Conducting research for and writes technical manuals, promotional literature, and other informational material regarding plans, programs, and projects
- Assists Engineering with applications for TXDOT road, sidewalk, and trail funding.
- Prepares a variety of studies, reports, and related information for decision-making purposes.
- Assisting the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services in the coordination of Geographic Information System maps products
- Attends Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council meetings to make presentations, or to participate in discussions as needed.
- Responding to citizen inquiries concerning land use and development issues
The work environment will require the employee to:
- Occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high and precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration

Required Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in land use planning, urban planning, public administration, or related field; and
- Five (5) years’ experience in planning or a related field. Master’s degree in land use planning, urban planning, public administration, or related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and experience
Special Requirements:
- Must have a valid Texas driver’s license within ninety (90) days of hire
- Must have a valid driver’s license by date-of-hire
- Must be physically capable of moving about on construction work sites and under adverse field conditions
