Classification Summary
General Statement of Duties:
Under general supervision, a Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker performs semi-skilled and general work, including equipment operation, maintenance, repair and construction in the Parks Department. Performs related work as required. Work hours are varied and may include evenings and weekends.
Distinguishing Features Of The Class
A Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and general work in the Parks Department and may be temporarily assigned to other Departments within the City as required. Must possess the skills, knowledge and physical capabilities to perform the duties of the position and must comply with City and Department policies, procedures and methods at all times. Must demonstrate an ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
A Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker may train, supervise and direct the work of part-time, seasonal workers or temporary workers.
Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative Only)
Parks Division
Maintains parks, Park structures and other public areas by watering, planting and fertilizing grass and plants; trims and mows lawns and landscapes; performs weed and litter control in parks and other public areas; applies various forestry techniques to trees, including trimming, pruning, transplanting, etc.; applies pesticides and herbicides safely and effectively; polices public areas to identify and remove safety hazards and to ensure proper maintenance of Parks and recreational areas for special events and daily use; assists in maintenance and operation of irrigation systems, cleaning and replacing heads and broken lines; performs routine and recurring repair and maintenance of structures, fences, park benches and other outdoor park facilities; paints as necessary; prepares athletic fields for use by teams, leagues and the general public; assists General Craftsworkers in more complicated and difficult phases of plumbing, carpentry, masonry and other skilled crafts; operates trenchers, loaders, tractors, gang mowers, hand mowers, weedeaters, concrete and asphalt saws, jackhammers, pickup trucks, compaction wackers and other equipment required in the maintenance of City parks; performs routine preventive maintenance of equipment by checking oil, fluids, water and tire levels and advises superiors of mechanical or operational problems; uses various hand tools, including shovels, rakes, picks, hoes and wrenches; performs routine housekeeping in City parks and facilities; and performs related work and weekend and overtime work as required.
Employment Standards
Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker must meet the following minimum qualifications: must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. and at least six (6) months of previous work experience performing maintenance work, repairs, equipment operation and motor vehicle operation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated proficiency in grounds maintenance. Demonstrated proficiency using maps and plans. Demonstrated proficiency in safely using required tools and operating required equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License.
Must possess or obtain the following within six (6) months: Flagger certification, Forklift certification, First aid/CPR, and any other appropriate certifications as required by law, ordinance or department regulations.
Additional Minimum Requirements For M&C
Paid Holidays
13 per year (10 scheduled; 3 “floating”)
New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and three floating holidays selected by the employee. Active employee will accrue all three floating holidays on February 1. Employees hired after February 1 will receive a prorated floating holiday accrual for the remainder of the calendar year based on their hire date.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
The purpose of PTO is to compensate employees for absences due to injury, illness, vacation and personal business. In addition, the program is designed to provide employees with personal flexibility regarding the use of leave hours. PTO hours accrue based upon the actual number of regular hours worked.

The City currently pays the entire dental and vision insurance premiums for the employee and dependents. Employee current premium share of 10% per month (depending on number of family members covered) for medical insurance.

The City currently pays the entire premium for group term life insurance coverage ($14,000) for employees. Employees may purchase Voluntary Term Life Insurance for employee, spouse and/or dependents through New York Life (previously Cigna).
Long Term Disability
