Salary Range: $22.61–$34.48 per hour *Starting salary depending on qualifications
Schedule: Monday–Friday during training, after training, days may vary; Hours: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Responsibilities


About the role

This role supports accurate water service and billing by performing field work related to water meters and service connections. You will work independently in the field while representing the Water Department to customers and supporting reliable utility operations.

What you’ll do

  • Turn water service valves on or off at designated addresses.
  • Install or exchange water meters and related appurtenances.
  • Check water meters and appurtenances for leaks and/or malfunctions and report findings as directed.
  • Use maps and drawings to locate and dig up and/or clean out curb boxes or meter vaults.
  • Receive written work assignments from a central office or oral instructions from an assigned radio dispatcher.
  • Interact with utility customers and address complaints with tact and courtesy while applying general knowledge of utility operations, policies, and practices.
  • Perform work independently while remaining subject to occasional inspection by a technical supervisor.

Qualifications


REQUIRES:

  • High school graduation and 6 months experience in general construction, maintenance, or repair work.
  • Must possess a valid State-issued driver's license in accordance with the City of KCMO policies.
  • May be required to possess a valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Class A, B, or C issued by the State of Missouri prior to the end of the employee’s probationary period (appropriate CDL will be determined by the department).
  • Must pass a preemployment drug screen and post-offer physical examination as prescribed by the City.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
