About the Water Department

KC Water provides essential water, wastewater, and stormwater services to support the health, safety, and growth of the Kansas City region. The department is responsible for maintaining and operating extensive systems for water collection, treatment, and distribution, serving more than 170,000 residential and business customers, as well as regional partners. Funded through user fees, KC Water is committed to delivering high-quality service, ensuring reliable infrastructure, and investing in sustainable solutions to meet both current and future community needs.

What you’ll do

• Collect water samples from various sources, including those impacted by main breaks, to monitor and assess water quality.
• Respond to water quality concerns by conducting field investigations, identifying problem areas, and collecting samples for analysis.
• Install, operate, and maintain a variety of sampling and monitoring equipment, including automatic samplers, meters, and gauges.
• Adhere to safety protocols, including confined space entry procedures, when conducting field activities.
• Provide support to laboratory activities by cleaning and preparing sample containers and glassware.
• Accurately record field data and observations, ensuring timely and accurate entry into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Communicate effectively with the public by providing information and addressing inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.

REQUIRES:

• High school graduation and 1 year of applicable experience in a related technical construction, environmental health, hazardous materials or engineering field.
• Must possess of a valid state issued driver's license in accordance with the City of KCMO policies.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer physical examination as prescribed by the City.

Preference

• Working knowledge of field methods, chemical testing, water sampling techniques, water distribution or sewer systems, use of ArcGIS mapping, knowledge of a Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Microsoft Office products such as Excel & OneNote.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
