Schedule: Monday-Friday 3:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m. *Mandatory overtime during inclement weather

About the Aviation Department

The Kansas City Aviation Department is responsible for managing and operating Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City Downtown Airport (Wheeler Field – MKC). As an enterprise fund department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, it is fully supported by airport-generated revenues rather than tax funding. The department focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective airport services to airlines, passengers, visitors, and the community. Its operations include overseeing airport administration, maintenance, promotions, and overall system performance while ensuring a high standard of customer service and operational excellence.

Responsibilities


What You'll Do:

  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs high-voltage electrical systems to ensure uninterrupted power across KCI terminal facilities
  • Repairs and rebuilds lighting fixtures and electrical components that support safe passenger and employee movement
  • Operates heavy equipment to repair directly buried electrical circuitry, restoring service efficiently and safely
  • Supports airport operations during severe weather by operating heavy snow-removal equipment during emergency events
  • Follows electrical safety standards, airport regulations, and City policies to maintain compliance and reliability
  • Performs other assigned duties that support airport infrastructure and emergency readiness
  • Important Information
    • Ability to obtain a Class A or B CDL within the probationary period, if required.
    • Ability to pass a background check, including a 10-year TSA background check.

Qualifications


REQUIRES:

  • High school graduation and 3 years of progressively responsible experience performing routine and moderately complex electrical maintenance and repair work;
  • OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license in accordance with City of KCMO policies.
  • May be required to possess a valid MO Class A, B, or C CDL prior to the end of the probationary period as determined by the department.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer physical examination as prescribed by the City.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
