About the Aviation Department

The Kansas City Aviation Department is responsible for managing and operating Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City Downtown Airport (Wheeler Field – MKC). As an enterprise fund department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, it is fully supported by airport-generated revenues rather than tax funding. The department focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective airport services to airlines, passengers, visitors, and the community. Its operations include overseeing airport administration, maintenance, promotions, and overall system performance while ensuring a high standard of customer service and operational excellence.

What You'll Do:

• Enforces critical laws, rules, and regulations to protect the property and people at the airport.
• Manages vehicle and pedestrian traffic across bustling airport facilities, keeping everything running smoothly.
• Responds to high-stakes crashes, fires, and emergency situations, providing lifesaving first aid in moments of need.
• Screens passengers and luggage to detect dangerous weapons, explosives, or hazardous materials to keep everyone safe.
• Collaborates with agencies, dignitaries, and large crowds, handling everything from bomb threats to preventing theft and vandalism, ensuring safety at all times!
• Performs other duties as assigned.
  

REQUIRES

• high school graduation.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license in accordance with City of KCMO policies.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, post-offer physical examination, and psychological evaluation as prescribed by the City.
• Must successfully complete a 10-year FAA background check.
• Must be able to obtain a Class A P.O.S.T certification within 6 months of employment.
• Must be eligible to obtain a special police commission as issued by the KCMO Police Department.
• Preference for applicants who possess a valid Missouri Class A - P.O.S.T Certification.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
