The Training and Staff Development Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership and oversight to the Marion Superior Court Youth Services Center Training Department. This position directly supervises Field Training Officers and oversees employee onboarding, field training, required certifications, continuing education, staff development, and leadership development. The position works with facility leadership, supervisors, and Human Resources to strengthen employee preparedness, performance, professional growth, and retention. The position also serves as the facility authority regarding approved training standards and is responsible for ensuring those standards are consistently applied in daily operations.
  1. Will provide leadership and direction to the Training Department, including establishing priorities, goals, expectations, and training schedules.
  2. Will directly supervise Field Training Officers, including work assignments, scheduling, timecard and leave approval, coaching, performance evaluations, and addressing performance concerns.
  3. Will oversee New Employee Orientation and the Field Training/On-the-Job Training Program, including employee assignments, competency assessments, documentation, remedial training, and readiness for independent assignments.
  4. Will develop and maintain the annual facility training plan and ensure required training, certifications, refresher training, and continuing education are provided across all shifts.
  5. Will oversee employee training and certification requirements and maintain records necessary for accreditation, PREA, audits, and other compliance requirements.
  6. Will develop, review, and maintain training curriculum, lesson plans, assessments, instructional materials, and training standards.
  7. Will provide guidance and development to Field Training Officers, instructors, and other employees responsible for delivering facility training.
  8. Will develop and coordinate staff and leadership-development opportunities for employees, emerging leaders, and current supervisors.
  9. Will support employee-retention efforts by reviewing onboarding outcomes, field-training progress, employee and supervisor feedback, and other training-related factors affecting employee success.
  10. Will work with Human Resources, Operations, and facility leadership on onboarding, recruitment, workforce-development, and employee-development initiatives as appropriate.
  11. Will routinely observe facility operations to ensure approved training, policies, and procedures are applied consistently. Will have authority, within the scope of approved training standards, to provide immediate corrective direction to employees and supervisors when practices conflict with approved training or established procedures, and will coordinate coaching, refresher, or remedial training as needed.
  12. Will coordinate training related to new policies, procedures, systems, equipment, and facility initiatives, including drills and practical exercises as appropriate.
  13. Will evaluate Training Department effectiveness and provide leadership with reports and recommendations regarding training compliance, employee development, retention-related trends, and identified training needs.
  14. Will coordinate internal and external training resources and assist with Training Department budget, equipment, certifications, vendors, conferences, and professional-development needs.
  15. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, education, organizational leadership, public administration, or a related field and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in juvenile justice, corrections, residential youth services, or a similar environment, with demonstrated experience in employee training, staff development, supervision, or operational leadership; or a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in one or more of these settings may be accepted in lieu of a degree. Prior supervisory experience is required.

Must be at least 25 years of age and possess strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, presentation, written, and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated computer proficiency required.

Must obtain and maintain instructor-level certification in First Aid/CPR, Handle With Care (HWC), and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), along with all other facility-required training, including PREA.

Must be able to work any shift, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
