*Basic Function*
Under direction, directs and supervises the law enforcement and crime
prevention activities and policies of the city.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities*
- Supervises and participates in the accident investigation, traffic
- Assists in criminal investigations
- May perform routine patrols
- Assigns and briefs officers at beginning of shift
- Monitors performance of officers, conducts performance appraisals,
- Responds to emergency scenes
- Reviews police officer reports and prepares reports as required
- Issues citations
- Serves warrants and subpoenas and appears in court
- Books and transports prisoners
- Takes and investigates complaints
- May perform routine maintenance on law enforcement vehicles
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- Knowledge of the principles of modern police administration and of
- Knowledge of criminal law with particular emphasis on the
preservation of evidence
- Ability to analyze and interpret police problems and criminal
- Ability to acquire cooperation of others in and out of the
- Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations
- Ability to effectively supervise subordinates
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and
*Education and Experience*
- Completion of high school or GED required; associates degree or two
Preferred
- Three years of law enforcement experience required at Independence
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is preferred
- A current Kansas drivers license
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must have completed Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law
- Must complete any advanced training as assigned, and maintain KLETC
- Must be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekends
- Primarily moderate to occasionally intense physical effort is
push, pull, reach, kneel, crawl, grasp, speak, and listen for
extended periods of time.

chemicals, etc.
