*Basic Function*

Under direction, patrols the city in the enforcement of law and order.

May also be tasked with providing a safe learning environment and law

enforcement presence in local schools.

*Essential Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Investigates and prepares reports of complaints and accidents
  • Issues citations and makes arrests
  • Responds to crime, accident, and emergency scenes as dispatched
  • May supervise others in the absence of the Police Sergeant
  • May train new officers
  • Serves subpoenas and warrants
  • Controls traffic and crowds
  • Appears in court
  • Books and transports prisoners
  • Trains school staff, counsels students, and makes presentations on

law related programs

  • Serves as a liaison between school staff, students, and law

enforcement

  • Takes and files fingerprints
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

*Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws,

regulations, and police literature

  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and

reasonable course of action giving due regard to the surrounding

hazards and circumstances of each situation

  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports
  • Ability to learn the use and care of automobile and small firearms
  • Willingness to complete extensive training
  • Knowledge of juvenile and school laws
  • Ability to learn about proper active shooter response and school

crisis planning

  • Knowledge of trends in teenage drug and alcohol abuse
  • Ability to communicate with students, school staff, and the public
  • Ability to counsel students about a variety of issues.
  • Physical agility

*Education and Experience*

  • Completion of high school or GED required; associates degree or two

years of college-level work in courses related to law enforcement

Preferred

  • Two years of law enforcement experience required
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is preferred

*Special Requirements*

  • A current Kansas drivers license
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must have completed Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law

Enforcement Training Center

  • Must complete any advanced training as assigned, and maintain KLETC

certification

  • May be required to complete School Resource Officer training from

the National Association of School Resource Officers

  • Must be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekends

*Physical Requirements*

  • Primarily moderate to occasionally intense physical effort is

required. Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, crouch,

grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.

*Working Conditions*

  • Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as

extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises,

chemicals, etc.
