Job Description
The duties of the Fire Hydrant Technician are to ensure that the City’s fire hydrants are maintained in good working order and remain freshly painted.
Job Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification; only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional; position-specific duties.
- Performs annual maintenance and painting of all City owned fire hydrants.
- Repairs and/or replaces fire hydrants as needed.
- Performs and recommends methods for cost-effective repairs; maintenance and installation.
- Maintains accurate records of all repairs and maintenance; and responsible for entering the information into the City’s Asset Management Program software.
- Supports other crews as needed to maintain operations in the water distribution division.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience and/or training in water distribution or related field.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in operation of light and heavy equipment.
- Must be able to work an “on-call” schedule when assigned or in severe weather conditions as needed.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid Texas driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Valid Texas Class “B” CDL; preferred; if hired without; must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
- TCEQ Class “D” or higher water certification; preferred; if hired without; must obtain within one (1) year from date of hire.
Required Knowledge of:
- Safety policies; procedures; and practices.
- Applicable local; State; and Federal laws; codes; regulations; and ordinances.
Required Skill in:
- Operating a variety of equipment including hand-tools; chain saws; mowers; weed eaters; etc.
- Following written and verbal instructions.
- Maintaining a professional manner when interacting with City employees and the public.
- Reading and interpreting maintenance and equipment manuals.
- Reading; comprehension; retaining and applying City and State policies and legislation; i.e. City ordinances; policy and procedures manuals; etc.
Reasoning Abilities:
- Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
- Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
- Ability to think quickly; maintain self-control and adapt to stressful situations.
- Ability to maintain all required licenses and certifications.
- Ability to use good judgement and effectively problem-solve.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff; supervisor; and the public.
- Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions; general correspondence; MSDS sheets; safety manuals; traffic signs and warning labels.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
- Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition; subtraction; multiplication; division).
