Position Summary
The Accounting Technician / Accounting Coordinator performs professional-level accounting, financial, and administrative support work in the maintenance, processing, and reporting of the City’s financial records. This position supports daily accounting operations including accounts payable, receivable, purchasing support, and general ledger functions in accordance with municipal, state, and federal regulations. The role requires a detail-oriented professional with 2–4 years of municipal finance or governmental accounting experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Processes accounts payable, purchase orders, and vendor payments in accordance with City policies
- Coordinates accounts receivable, billing, cash receipts, and deposit reconciliations
- Assists with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
- Performs general ledger entries, account reconciliations, and journal postings
- Maintains fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
- Tracks and reconciles grants, restricted funds, and project accounts
- Assists in budget preparation, amendments, and departmental tracking
- Prepares financial reports, schedules, and audit support documentation
- Responds to internal department inquiries and external vendor or citizen inquiries
- Ensures compliance with Texas Local Government Code, GASB standards, audit requirements, and internal controls
- Provides cross-training support for other Finance Department functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (Bachelor’s Degree preferred)
- 2–4 years of experience in municipal finance, governmental accounting, or public sector financial operations
- Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within required timeframe)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with municipal ERP systems (Tyler Technologies, New World, Munis, Springbrook)
- Knowledge of GASB standards, governmental fund accounting, and budgetary controls
- Experience with accounts payable automation, and purchasing systems
- Prior audit preparation or CAFR support experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices
- Strong understanding of accounts payable, receivable, and budgeting
- High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail
- Ability to analyze financial data and identify discrepancies
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and municipal accounting systems
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with departments, vendors, and the public
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Physical and Work Environment
Primarily office environment
Requires prolonged sitting, computer use, and occasional filing
May require occasional overtime during budget, audit, or fiscal year-end
