Inspect residential and commercial buildings at various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure code compliance. Issue notices of violation, stop-work orders, and occupancy permits. Respond to questions from contractors, property owners, and the public. Required qualifications include one of the following: two years of responsible, directly related construction experience, such as serving as a foreman, that required the ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications; or two years of experience in an architect’s or engineer’s office performing building design or drafting duties; or two years’ experience as a building code inspector for a municipality or other local government agency; or an associate degree in a design- or construction-related field; or a bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, fire science, or building technology. Must obtain Kentucky Building Inspector certification within 18 months of employment and a valid driver’s license are required. Additional ICC certifications in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or fire inspection are preferred.  Salary based on certification level and experience.

Conduct inspections of residential and commercial construction projects at various stages of construction.

Carry out the complete scope of municipal code enforcement and compliance responsibilities on an independent basis.

Interpret and apply the codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the assigned area, and clearly explain them to others. 

Verify compliance with approved plans, permits, adopted building codes, and local ordinances. 

Document inspection findings and prepare inspection reports. 

Explain code requirements and inspection results to contractors, homeowners, and developers. 

Respond promptly and courteously to inquiries, complaints, and service requests. Identify deficiencies and issue correction notices for code violations. 

Perform re-inspections to verify corrective actions. 

Assist with investigations of unsafe structures and code complaints. 

Maintain accurate records using electronic permitting and inspection software. 

Attend required training to obtain and maintain professional certifications. 

Coordinate with City Departments and Agencies on needs and ongoing activities.

Perform related duties as assigned. 

High school diploma or GED required.

Two years’ experience in a responsible, directly related construction position, such as a foreman, which required the ability to effectively read and interpret building plans and specifications; or two years’ experience in an architect's or engineer's office performing building design or drafting duties; or graduated from a college or university with an associate degree in design or construction related subject; or graduated from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, fire science or building technology.

Valid driver's license. 

Kentucky Certified Building Inspector. 

Additional ICC certifications in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or fire inspection are preferred.

Basic knowledge of building construction methods and materials. 

Basic knowledge of zoning ordinances specifically permitted and nonpermitted uses in various zoning designations.

Ability to read maps, blueprints, and construction drawings. 

Ability to learn and interpret building codes and ordinances. 

Strong communication and customer service skills. 

Ability to work independently after training. 

Basic computer proficiency. 

Combination of office and field work. 

Frequent travel to construction sites. 

Exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and construction hazards. 

Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds and climbing ladders or stairs. 

May be required to attend evening meetings or respond to emergency situations. 

Stand, walk, bend, climb, and inspect construction sites. 

Read construction plans and use measuring equipment. 

Sufficient vision and hearing to conduct inspections safely.
