Postdoctoral Fellow - Cancer Genomics and Biology

City of Hope
Monrovia, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 12/16/2025 CLOSED ON 1/28/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Postdoctoral Fellow - Cancer Genomics and Biology position at City of Hope?

Join the forefront of groundbreaking research at City of Hope where we're changing lives and making a real difference in the fight against cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. Our dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff are driven by a common mission: Contribute to innovative approaches in predicting, preventing, and curing diseases, shaping the future of medicine through cutting-edge research.

The Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope is looking for talented Postdoctoral Fellows in Cancer Genomics and Biology to join Dr. Zhaohui Gu’s laboratory.

Dr. Gu’s laboratory investigates molecular markers that define high-risk B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) subgroups and elucidates their biological functions. The group integrates bulk and single-cell genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenomics with mechanistic studies using in vitro and in vivo models to dissect B-ALL and related hematologic malignancies. The lab also studies normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and the bone marrow microenvironment, which provides essential context for understanding leukemia initiation, clonal evolution, and therapy response.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Design and execute experiments to understand the molecular functions of driver genetic lesions in high-risk leukemia subtypes.

  • Perform high-throughput sequencing-based assays to systematically characterize leukemic and normal hematopoietic cells.

  • Interpret multi-omics datasets in close collaboration with computational team members.

  • Use knock-in and xenograft mouse models to study leukemogenesis, clonal evolution, leukemia-niche interactions, and drug responses.

  • Troubleshoot experiments, maintain accurate records of methods and results, and contribute to rigorous and reproducible research practices in the lab.

  • Present results in internal seminars and external conferences and contribute to the writing of manuscripts.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in a relevant field, for example Biology, Medicine, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Engineering, Immunology, Hematology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong publication record that demonstrates expertise in at least one of the following areas:

    • Hematology

    • Leukemia or other hematologic malignancies

    • Cancer genomics, transcriptomics or epigenomics

  • Hands-on experience with core molecular and cellular biology techniques and standard biochemical assays.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred qualifications:

Candidates with one or more of the following will be viewed favorably:

  • Experience with functional genomics or epigenomics platforms or single-cell technologies (scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, CyTOF).

  • Familiarity with analysis of high-throughput sequencing data and interest in learning or applying computational tools for leukemia genomics.

  • Background in classification or biomarker studies, especially for leukemia or other hematologic malignancies.
