Position Summary
The Wastewater Worker I plays a vital role in supporting the maintenance and upkeep of the City of Holts Summit’s wastewater (sewer) infrastructure. This position is primarily responsible for assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of city-owned equipment and the city-owned wastewater system. This position may also be asked to assist in providing custodial and maintenance services to various city-owned buildings and property used and maintained by the sewer department. The ideal candidate will be familiar with pipe fitting, plumbing and general construction concepts, the maintenance and upkeep of small power tools/equipment as well as the maintenance and upkeep of larger equipment such as motor vehicles, skid-loaders, etc. During spring and summer months this position will be required to assist with mowing and maintaining city-owned green spaces and right of ways for sewer main lines and pump stations. This position may be required to keep daily/monthly/quarterly/yearly logs for certain assigned tasks. Work is performed with considerable independence, under the general supervision of the Sewer Department Foreman and the Sewer Superintendent.
Essential Functions:
The Maintenance Worker II is tasked with a variety of duties related to the operation and upkeep of the street system, buildings, and parks. Key responsibilities include:
Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain various types of power tools, small pieces of equipment, light machinery, and a variety of motor vehicles and heavy equipment such as, skid-loaders, mini excavators, and dump trucks.
Physical Requirements: Lift at least 50 pounds repeatedly, and perform manual labor involving heavy lifting, stooping, bending, and twisting.
Public Interaction: This position will occasionally interact with members of the public while engaging in the performance of assigned duties. Interactions will typically occur with both customers of the sewer system; as well as contractors and developers adding new connections to the system.
Flexibility: Maintain flexible hours for emergency callouts. This position does require an on-call rotation that will result in evening and weekend callouts; as well as the possibility of being called out on holidays.
Safety: Perform all required work while adhering to workplace safety policies and wearing proper personal protective equipment.
Site Preparation/Maintenance: Clean and prepare sites to eliminate hazards, set up barricades and traffic control devices, and reroute traffic as needed.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in a plumbing-related field is preferred.
- Previous experience with heavy equipment, skid-loaders, dump trucks, etc. is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge: Understanding of sewer main construction and repairs, property maintenance, land use, new construction, and general maintenance.
Technical Skills: Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment, including lawn mowers, skid loaders, dump trucks, etc.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately. Ability to complete written logs documenting certain activities, etc.
Availability & Responsiveness: Willingness to be on-call during assigned time periods and have the ability to respond to work during such times.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Work Environment: This role requires working in a variety of environments and weather conditions while using appropriate safety equipment. Exposure to unpredictable circumstances and inclement weather is likely.
Physical Demands: The position demands the ability to work in extreme weather conditions, lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, and operate various pieces of machinery and equipment.
Attendance: Regular attendance is essential to the role.
Special Requirements:
- Must satisfactorily pass a background investigation. Must pass pre-employment physical, urinalysis screening, and physical capacity profile screening.
- Must comply with city policies and procedures and municipal codes.
- Must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license. A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); with an air brake endorsement, is a requirement of this position. If applicants do not have a CDL, they will be required to obtain a CDL permit within 6 months of hire and will be required to have a full CDL license within 1-year of hire.
Work Schedule: The Sewer Department has equipment that operates on a 24-hour, 7-day a week basis. This position may be required to work any time during the 24-hour day, and any day of the week; as necessary, to include weekends and holidays. This position does not come with any guarantee of a schedule, or specific days worked or days off.
For the most part, this position is full-time Monday-Friday, with occasional evenings/weekends/holidays in the event of a call-out. Hours are set at the discretion of the City Administrator, Mayor, and/or Board of Aldermen. Work hours may also vary depending on the current projects, emergency repairs, season and weather conditions, or as otherwise directed by the Sewer Superintendent. Additional hours may be required, as this position may attend training sessions, meetings, and/or assist with special events as necessary.
This position is part of a rotational “on-call” assignment within the Sewer Department; which could result in having to report to work at any time during the assigned on-call period. The on-call schedule is made by; and at, the discretion of the Sewer Superintendent.
Selection Process: Candidates will be evaluated based on a formal application, interview, and review by the City Administrator.
