Position Summary

The Maintenance Woker I plays a vital role in supporting the maintenance and upkeep of various components of the City of Holts Summit’s infrastructure. This position is primarily responsible for assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of city-owned equipment, streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems, city owned park-grounds and parks equipment. This position may also be asked to assist in providing custodial and maintenance services to various city-owned buildings and property. The ideal candidate will be familiar with the maintenance and upkeep of small engines (i.e. lawnmowers/trimmers) as well as the maintenance and upkeep of larger equipment such as motor vehicles, backhoes, skid-loaders, etc. During the spring and summer months, this position will primarily be responsible for the maintenance, mowing, and upkeep of the city’s park grounds and equipment. During the winter months this position will be required to assist with snow removal operations. This position will be required to keep daily/monthly/quarterly/yearly logs for certain assigned tasks. Work is performed with considerable independence, under the general supervision of the Public Works Foreman and the Street Superintendent.

Essential Functions

The Maintenance Worker I is tasked with a variety of duties related to the operation and upkeep of the street system, buildings, and parks.

Key responsibilities include:

Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain various types of lawn maintenance equipment, light machinery, and a variety of motor vehicles and heavy equipment such as tractors, skid-loaders, backhoes, and dump trucks.

Tasks: Perform landscaping, maintenance, and janitorial work at parks, ball fields, and various city-owned buildings. Apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides as needed and ensure city grounds and buildings are orderly. Assist with street maintenance and construction and assist with the maintenance and upkeep of city owned equipment. Assist with snow removal as needed during winter months. Assist with city sponsored special events.

Physical Requirements: Lift at least 50 pounds repeatedly, and perform manual labor involving heavy lifting, stooping, bending, and twisting.

Public Interaction: This position will occasionally interact with members of the public while engaging in the performance of assigned duties. Interactions will typically occur in and around city parks and walking trails.

Flexibility: Maintain flexible hours for emergency callouts and snow removal events.

Safety: Perform all required work while adhering to workplace safety policies and wearing proper personal protective equipment.

Site Preparation/Maintenance: Clean and prepare sites to eliminate hazards, set up barricades and traffic control devices, and reroute traffic as needed.

Painting and Signage: Assist in replacing various signs (street name/traffic control/parking lot/etc.), painting and maintaining lines/symbols/curbs on various city-owned parking lots.

Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience in lawn and building maintenance is preferred. Previous experience with snow removal equipment, heavy equipment, skid-loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, etc. is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge: Understanding of street construction and repairs, property maintenance, land use, new construction, and general maintenance.

Technical Skills: Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment, including lawn mowers, backhoes, skid-loaders, striping machines, dump trucks, and snowplows.

Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately. Effective in collaborating with team members and interacting with the public to ensure clear and professional communication.

Availability & Responsiveness: Willingness to be on-call during anticipated weather storms and have the ability to respond to work during such times. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Work Environment: This role requires working in a variety of weather and traffic conditions while using appropriate safety equipment. Exposure to unpredictable circumstances and inclement weather is likely.

Physical Demands: The position demands the ability to work in extreme weather conditions, lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, and operate various pieces of machinery and equipment.

Attendance: Regular attendance is essential to the role. Special Requirements Must satisfactorily pass a background investigation. Must pass pre-employment physical, urinalysis screening, and physical capacity profile screening. Must comply with city policies and procedures and municipal codes. Must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license. A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); If applicants do not have a CDL, they will be required to obtain a CDL permit within 6 months of hire and will be required to have a full CDL license within 1-year of hire.

Work Schedule The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and ensuring clear and accessible roadways within the city; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position may be required to work any time during the 24-hour day, and any day of the week; as necessary, to include weekends and holidays. This position does not come with any guarantee of a schedule, or specific days worked or days off. For the most part, this position is full-time Monday-Friday, with occasional evenings/weekends/holidays in the event of an emergency call-out. Hours are set at the discretion of the City Administrator, Mayor, and/or Board of Aldermen. Work hours may also vary depending on current projects and/or inclement weather conditions, or as otherwise directed by the Street Superintendent. Additional hours may be required, as this position may attend training sessions, meetings, and/or assist with special events as necessary.

At times, this position may require a rotational “on-call” assignment within the Street Department; which could result in having to report to work at any time during the assigned on-call period. The on-call schedule is activated and made by; and at, the discretion of the Street Superintendent.

Selection Process Candidates will be evaluated based on a formal application, interview, and review by the City Administrator.
