What You Will Be Doing

The day-to-day operations of a Building Permit Technician in the City of Hillsboro involve a variety of tasks that are essential for maintaining safety and compliance in construction projects. This includes processing and reviewing building permit applications for completeness and adherence to local codes, as well as providing customer service to homeowners, contractors, and architects with inquiries about the permit process and zoning requirements. The technician maintains accurate records of all permits and related documentation, conducts initial plan reviews, and coordinates with other city departments such as planning and engineering. Additionally, they schedule building inspections and monitor compliance throughout construction, ensuring that projects align with approved plans and regulations.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review and Process Applications: Evaluate building permit applications for completeness and compliance with local codes and regulations.
  • Customer Assistance: Provide guidance and support to homeowners, contractors, and architects regarding the permit process, zoning laws, and building codes.
  • Prescreen Reviews: Conduct initial reviews of construction plans to ensure they meet minimal permit submittal standards.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and organized records of all permit applications, approvals, inspections, and related documentation.
  • Inspection Coordination: Schedule and coordinate building inspections, ensuring that all necessary inspections are conducted throughout the construction process.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Work with other city departments, such as Planning, Water and Public Works, to ensure a comprehensive approach to permit processing and compliance.
  • Public Outreach and Education: Educate the public on building codes, safety regulations, and the permitting process to promote compliance and understanding.


Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Education & Training: Possesses an associate’s degree or coursework in construction management or a related field.
  • Industry Knowledge: Brings experience with building permits or construction and understands local building codes and zoning regulations.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in permit processing software and able to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Communication: Communicates clearly and professionally in both verbal and written formats.
  • Customer Service: Provides excellent service and builds positive relationships with contractors, homeowners, and colleagues.
  • Attention to Detail: Reviews applications thoroughly and identifies issues with accuracy.
  • Problem-Solving: Addresses questions and obstacles with sound judgment and effective solutions.

Job Qualifications

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED, and 3 years of customer service experience in building construction or design, land development, regulatory code compliance; or any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.


License(s) / Certifications:

  • Valid, current Driver’s License and safe driving record
  • ICC Permit Technician Certification or equivalent within 12 months of hire
