Description of Primary Purpose



Primary Purpose: Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, service, and installation tasks related to public infrastructure and City properties. Infrastructure includes essential community systems such as roadways, bridges, water distribution, storm and sanitary sewer systems, ravines, ponds, and related appurtenances.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the assigned Sectional Foreman or Duty Foreman.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities



Employees may be assigned to any of the three sections—Streets, Water, or Sewer—and may be transferred between sections as operational needs require.


Perform street maintenance duties including asphalt and concrete repairs to streets, alleys, sidewalks, and driveway aprons. Tasks include pothole repair, raking asphalt, assisting with concrete mixing, pouring, forming, and finishing. Perform right-of-way restoration and maintenance of traffic signs, control devices, and fencing.
  • Assist with water distribution system maintenance including tasks related to water meters, water mains, fire hydrants, valves, service lines, and associated components.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on sanitary and storm sewer systems, manholes, and inlets. Assist with diagnostic work such as dye testing and sewer televising.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Experience: Proof of satisfactory prior work-related experience in public works or construction trades is required. One (1) year of municipal or similar work experience is preferred.

Certification or License: A valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B), or equivalent, is required at the time of hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies:


  • Knowledge of safe practices and procedures for operating tools, machinery, and public works equipment
  • Understanding of maintenance methods for street, sewer, and water systems
  • Ability to read and follow work orders
  • Competence in using hand and power tools
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and ability to follow safety protocols
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors

Supplemental Information



Work Environment: Work is performed primarily outdoors under a range of weather conditions and environmental factors. Conditions may include loud to very loud noise levels, heat, humidity, dust, cold, rain, and snow. Hearing protection and other PPE may be required.

Normal hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This is a seasonal position expected to work approximately 40 hours per week for a total of 1,100 hours. During emergencies, employees may be required to be available during off-hours.

Tools and Equipment Used: Construction and maintenance tools and equipment including, but not limited to:


  • Mechanized skid steer, breaker, backhoe, excavators
  • Air compressor and tools (jackhammers, chisels, drills)
  • Hand tools (shovels, picks, brooms, lutes, rollers)
  • Chainsaws, trimmers, levels, rulers
  • Bucket trucks, vacuum trucks, flusher/jetter trucks, snow plows
  • Pickup trucks, dump trucks (1-ton, 2.5-ton, 5-ton)
  • Sign machines and other specialized motorized equipment

Physical Demands: Work involves lifting equipment and materials, working in awkward spaces, and wearing required safety gear. Tasks require bending, twisting, climbing, reaching, squatting, jumping, and lifting items up to 60 pounds. Work is performed in all weather conditions and requires full mobility. Employees must have the physical ability to perform manual labor throughout the assignment. Vision and hearing correction is permitted.
