Description
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The School Crossing Guard- PT is responsible for, under limited supervision, directing traffic to allow for the safe crossing of children and other pedestrians at school crossing locations, following safety regulations and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all functions, responsibilities, skills, and abilities. Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate.
- Directs actions of children and traffic at street school crossing zone to ensure safe crossing.
- Interrupts traffic and escorts children and other pedestrians across street.
- Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding school crossing zone laws and reports infractions to police.
- Places caution signs at designated points before going on duty and removes signs at end of shift.
- Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints and suggestions.
- Observes all safety regulations and reports potential safety hazards.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be a Citizen of the United States.
- Successfully complete training in traffic direction.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon assignment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
- Receives limited supervision by a Division Supervisor.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Traffic laws related to school crossing zones.
- Geographical layout of the City of Harlingen.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to:
- React quickly and calmly in dangerous and emergency situations.
- Comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
- Oversee and coordinate the proper and smooth flow of traffic as necessary.
- Lead children and other pedestrians across the road safely.
- Perform duties in a courteous manner and with the outmost integrity in the best interest of the public.
- Communicate effectively with school children and pedestrians.
Education & Experience:
- No prior experience or training required.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
- None required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to talk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving vehicle traffic and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
