ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develops, updates, and maintains GIS datasets, maps, and related files to support the City’s planning, development, and operational functions.
- Independently creates and maintains GIS data layers such as zoning boundaries, subdivision plats, permit tracking, utility infrastructure, and other municipal features.
- Collects, verifies, and imports GIS and GPS data from a variety of internal and external sources to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Research and compile geographic and tabular information to develop standardized data for integration into the City’s GIS.
- Analyzes, interprets, and validates mapping data to identify and correct errors or inconsistencies.
- Prepares and produces maps, exhibits, and other cartographic products for department and public use.
- Produce high-quality digital and printed maps, exhibits, and graphics for reports, presentations, and public meetings.
- Operates and maintains GIS-related hardware and software; implements GIS solutions and improvements as needed.
- Provide GIS technical support, troubleshooting, and training to City staff and assist in implementing GIS solutions for other departments.
- Maintain GIS-related hardware, software, and equipment; recommend upgrades and improvements as needed.
- Responds to requests for spatial data and mapping support from other city departments.
- Works collaboratively with other departments to meet cross-functional GIS needs, such as public works, utilities, emergency management, and parks.
Additional Requirements:
- This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles for City Business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and possess a valid driver’s license and must have an acceptable driving record.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
- Works under the general direction of the Planning & Development Director.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related GIS software.
- GPS data collection and data management principles.
- Cartographic design and spatial analysis techniques.
- SQL, Python, or similar scripting languages for GIS automation.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to:
- Research, analyze, and interpret spatial data and produce clear, accurate map products
- Work independently and collaboratively with multiple departments and stakeholders.
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain data integrity.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field with coursework in GIS;
- One to two years of professional GIS experience preferred; internships or project-based experience may be considered.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
- Valid Texas Driver’s License.
- GIS Professional certification or ESRI Technical Certification preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is regularly required to sit and use hands and fingers. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily in an office setting or a well-lighted and temperature-controlled working environment. Regular use of computers and related equipment is required.
