The City of Hanford is seeking to fill one (1) Fleet Mechanic I/II vacancy in the Public Works Department - Fleet Division. This position performs skilled maintenance and repair of City equipment and vehicles; to perform work required to maintain shop equipment and facilities; and to provide skilled support to an assigned supervisor.
Fleet Mechanic I - This is the entry level classification in the Fleet Mechanic maintenance series. Incumbents initially perform the more routine duties assigned to positions in this class and work under close supervision. The Fleet Mechanic I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level and the greater complexity of tasks performed at the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
Fleet Mechanic II - This is the journey level in the Fleet Mechanic maintenance series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Fleet Mechanic in that the latter is responsible for providing technical and functional supervision over assigned staff.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Inspect, service, maintain, repair and overhaul a variety of automobiles, trucks, police and fire vehicles, refuse trucks, and miscellaneous construction and support equipment.
Inspect, service, maintain and repair gasoline, diesel and alternatively fueled engines and fuel system components; perform diagnosis of electronic engine controls and emission control systems.
Inspect, repair and replace hydraulic and pneumatic systems and related components.
Repair and maintain generators, fuel island, carousel, electronic gate and other specialized systems and components.
Perform welding and fabrication projects; make minor and major modifications to vehicles and equipment to improve functionality.
Ensure commercial vehicles are maintained in compliance with California Highway Patrol Biannual Terminal Inspection (BIT).
Respond to road calls for service of flat tires, dead batteries, or leaks in City vehicles.
Operate shop equipment and machine tools such as band saws, brake lathes, pressure washer, battery and charging system testers, emission analyzers, gas and electric welding and cutting equipment, and other common automotive shop equipment.
Observe and comply with hazardous waste and material handling and disposal procedures and regulations.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Minimum Qualifications
Fleet Mechanic I
Knowledge Of:
Basic tools and equipment used in automotive maintenance.
Basic techniques and methods of automotive repair.
Use of a variety of hand and power tools.

Perform routine maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Perform basic repairs and adjustments to City vehicles and equipment.
On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Intermittently, analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; and explain jobs to other employees.
Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on to heavy equipment to test or inspect systems; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less, and occasionally exert in excess of 100 pounds of force.

Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas, diesel and LPG-powered equipment.
Operating and repair characteristics of the entire range of City-owned vehicles and light and heavy equipment.
Operation and care of internal combustion engines, hydraulics and electrical components.
Ability To:
Perform minor and major maintenance work on a variety of mechanical equipment and vehicles.
Inspect gas, diesel and LPG-powered equipment, hydraulic and electrical systems to locate difficulties.
Experience and Education
Experience:
Two years of responsible automotive, heavy-duty truck, and equipment mechanic experience similar to a Fleet Mechanic I with the City of Hanford.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificates
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class B driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a fork lift certificate within twelve months of appointment.
