About the Department

The City of Hanahan Fire Department is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of our community through fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, fire prevention, public education, and emergency preparedness.

Position Summary

Under the direction of a Company Officer, firefighters respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents including structure fires, vehicle fires, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, medical emergencies, and public service calls. Firefighters perform firefighting, rescue, emergency medical care, fire prevention activities, station maintenance, equipment inspections, and daily training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire, rescue, EMS, hazardous materials, and other emergency incidents.
  • Perform fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and property conservation operations.
  • Provide emergency medical care within the scope of certification.
  • Operate and maintain firefighting equipment, tools, and apparatus.
  • Participate in daily training, drills, and continuing education.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain fire stations, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Conduct public education and community outreach programs.
  • Complete reports and required documentation accurately and professionally.
  • Work effectively as part of a team in stressful, physically demanding, and hazardous environments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • South Carolina Firefighter I Certification (Firefighter II preferred or ability to obtain).
  • Current South Carolina EMT Certification (or ability to obtain within department requirements).
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background investigation, pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Firefighter II Certification.
  • Hazardous Materials Operations Certification.
  • Driver/Operator Certification.
  • Previous career or volunteer fire service experience.
  • Additional fire or EMS certifications are encouraged.

  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to learn and participate in ongoing training.

Work Schedule

The City of Hanahan Fire Department operates on a 48/96 schedule, allowing firefighters to work 48 consecutive hours followed by 96 hours (4 days) off. This schedule provides an outstanding work-life balance, giving firefighters more time with family, personal interests, recovery, and continuing education.

Firefighters work rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays and must be available to respond to emergency incidents as assigned.
