- Makes frequent rounds through all areas of the facilities to monitor operations to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
- Reviews records and reports to ensure that compliance with policies and procedures are properly documented
- Discusses problems during inspection rounds, with the unit supervisors, officers, floor supervisors, and assists them in deciding the appropriate course of action to resolve the problems
- Educates correctional staff on how to improve the performance of their assigned duties
- Prepares or reviews performance evaluations for assigned staff, reviews or determines subordinates’ recommendations for staff action as necessary, assigns special projects, and evaluates those assignments
- Responds to and takes charge of emergencies beyond authority or ability of line staff
- Supports the efforts of the correctional officers in their supervision of inmates
- Maintains a high visibility and constantly moves throughout all inmate occupied areas
- Ensures through constructive supervision and leadership that all officers are performing their duties effectively
- Reviews incident reports for compliance with policy and procedures, accuracy and correctness
- Responds to inquiries or complaints from staff, inmates, or the public
- Analyzes and evaluates staff performance issues and identifies training needs
- Completes employee evaluations for each Sergeant
- Reviews assignments of Sergeants
- Trains newly promoted Sergeants
- Refers staff to Employee Assistance Program, as necessary
- Accounts for the attendance or absence of assigned staff
- Reviews performance of staff who engage in secondary employment to ensure duties are not hindered
- Notifies Commander of subordinates who perform extraordinary actions
- Briefs the oncoming Shift Commander and receiving briefings from the exiting Shift Commander
- Ensures staff has the necessary resources available to perform their assigned duties
- Verifies the authenticity and legality of court documents, detainers, warrants, etc.
- Safeguards all record files in the case of an emergency evacuation
- Reviews email correspondence received and disseminating relevant information when applicable
- Ensures the clearing of the inmate count at shift change and other times, as necessary
- Verifies and approves meal count forms
- Collects DOC, ACA, CALEA, NCCHC proofs of compliance and routing same to the Accreditation Manager
- Ensures personnel inspections are completed and documented

- Reviews admittance of inmates to include weekenders
- Authorizes strip searches, where appropriate
- Authorizes transports of inmates in a medical emergency

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
Physical And Dexterity Requirements
Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. Requires annual physical and physical agility test. Requires operation of firearm and standard office equipment.
Successful completion of the requirements for graduation from a four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related criminal justice field, social science, or administration. Qualifying experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the educational requirement. Four (4) years in a supervisory position directing staff involved in maintaining order, discipline and security in a correctional or law enforcement organization.
