Typical Task:
- Supervise Sergeants and Deputies during assigned shifts
- Oversee daily correctional operations and inmate supervision
- Conduct facility inspections, review reports, and ensure compliance
- Lead emergency response efforts and critical incident management
- Train, mentor, and evaluate staff performance
- Manage staffing schedules, assignments, and operational readiness
- Ensure adherence to policies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements
- Maintain safety, security, and order within the facility
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice, social science, administration, or a related field.
- An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered instead of the preferred degree.
- A minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in a correctional or law enforcement environment.
- Must successfully pass a background investigation before employment or promotion.
- This position is safety sensitive and subject to alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with City policy.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record based on City of Hampton criteria.
Additional Requirements:
- Must qualify to carry and use firearms pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia and DCJS standards.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during citywide emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
