The City is offering a Sign-On Bonus for Bus Mechanics:  $500 with first paycheck and 2% of gross earnings during first year of employment at first anniversary.
  • Candidates can complete up to 20 ASE Tests to earn up to an additional $5.00 per hour.
  • Late night and weekend work earns an additional $1.00 per hour. 
  • Snap On and Milwaukee tools provided to all mechanics. 
  • Uniforms and Laundry Service provided.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday through Friday, 4:30am to 1:30pm with occasional Saturdays.
 This position is eligible for overtime. 
 In addition, a shift differential of $1.00/hour will be paid for working the following hours:

  • Monday – Friday: 6:30 PM until 4:00 AM
  • Saturday – all day (24 hours)


Job Summary
Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, acts as a working supervisor providing hands-on training, technical support, direction, and assistance in the repair and diagnostic evaluation of vehicles and equipment. Supervises activities of assigned staff, including setting priorities, creating and assigning individual work orders, monitoring production, monitoring training, and taking necessary disciplinary action consistent with City policies. Ensures fleet and equipment are kept in a state of good repair, so vehicles present no problems or interruptions in service. Coordinates required maintenance with operations schedules and South Carolina (SC) Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations. Assists the Fleet Manager in assuring the accuracy of vehicle history records, including shop work orders in fleet management software along with monthly oil sample reports. Assists in scheduling fleet campaigns or repairs to improve vehicle performance. Assists the department with procurement of new equipment. Assists in new equipment installs that include Intelligent Transit Systems (ITS) equipment, radio equipment and safety equipment. Test drive vehicles to evaluate quality of repair. Conducts safety meetings and coordinates safety training. Documents and reports all accidents. Serves as subject matter expert on the Accident Review and/or Safety Committee as required.

  • Repair and Replace Vehicles and Equipment: Supervise and assist employees in maintenance and repair tasks for all vehicle systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, battery electric drivetrains, transmissions, 12- and 24-volt electrical systems, ITS systems, fare structure, engine and transmission computer systems, HVAC systems, and brake systems. Oversee and participate in the repair and/or replacement of defective components as determined through efficient and effective diagnostic troubleshooting procedures. Assist the department with procurement of new equipment. Rebuild components to be reinstalled. Weld metal objects together by means of an oxyacetylene torch or mig welder apparatus. Coordinate with operations and under federal guidelines when scheduling preventative maintenance and other services. Ensure that repairs meet SCDOT and FTA regulations for safety and accuracy. Conduct quality control inspections of all maintenance work to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations. Test drive vehicles to certify components of repair and to determine any additional repairs that are needed. Return vehicles to service following repairs. Maintain the proper up-to-date files on oil analysis reports and inform Fleet Manager of any abnormal readings.

  • Conduct Troubleshooting and Diagnostic Evaluations: Read, understand, and comprehend troubleshooting procedures/schematics. Methodically follow step-by-step troubleshooting procedures to locate the defective component. Utilize experience to diagnose problems not clearly defined by troubleshooting manuals. Logically determine the most efficient and cost-effective repair to minimize downtime and impact on department budget. Assist Mechanics in properly diagnosing defects.

  • Supervise Assigned Staff: Supervise assigned personnel, including setting performance expectations and standards and prioritizing and assigning work, writing and conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff training; coaching, mentoring, and counseling employees; ensuring staff compliance with departmental and City policies and procedures; and maintaining safe work environment. Resolve sensitive issues through the chain of command. Participate in the hiring and selection of staff for open positions and ensure the timely documentation and disciplining of employees consistent with human resources policies. Address conflicts and challenges promptly to promote a positive, inclusive, and productive team environment. Support management in the implementation and continuous improvement of Safety Management System processes and activities. Monitor compliance with Greenlink’s Agency Safety Plan.

  • Respond to Road Calls: Respond to road calls with service truck and repair vehicle on site when possible. When necessary, participate in preparing vehicle to be towed and ensure vehicles return to shop.

Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Over four (4) years of experience in hands-on vehicle repair to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Completion of level III City Competency Classification or Diesel Bus Mechanic test.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on heavy duty vehicles, including transit buses or diesel engines.
Driver's License Requirements
  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence. 
  • Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence. 
  • Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee. 
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of:
  • Electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions.
  • Failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles.
  • Procedures and technical methods utilized in the testing, repair and adjustment of radio and other electronic communications equipment.
  • Fare collection system repair and maintenance.
  • ITS repair and maintenance.
  • Electrical and gas welding.
  • OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Work with all levels of personnel and outside contractors and maintain good working relationships.
  • Translate industry terminology into straightforward terms for explanatory purposes.
  • Use pertinent test equipment including computers, gauges, and various types of handheld, mechanical and electronic testing or diagnostic equipment.
  • Operate revenue and non-revenue vehicles in and around bus garage/shop areas and on and along public rights-of-way.
  • Select, supervise, train, motivate, assign, evaluate, counsel, and discipline staff.
  • Use independent judgment and decision-making abilities to apply technical skills effectively including making quick accurate decisions to minimize downtime of vehicles.
  • Organize work to minimize downtime.
  • Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
  • Detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness.
  • Work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and a reasonable amount of overtime.
  • Read, understand, and implement technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, service updates, and procedures, related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and their systems.
  • Write reports and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
  • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions; work with fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurements.
  • Use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, electrical power tools, pneumatic power tools, a/c recovery machine, forklift, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press.
  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include Cummins Insight, Allison DOC, Proterra Diagnostics, and Luminator destination sign software.
Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Fleet maintenance shop.
Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:  
Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse.
Physical Demands:  
Constantly requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting and handling/grasping. Very heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, exerting 50-100 pounds frequently, or exerting 20-50 pounds constantly.
Mental Demands:  
Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations.
