Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Schedule may change during holiday weeks or for emergency services, requiring a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, or holidays with little or no notice. This position is also subject to after-hours on-call responsibilities.
The City of Greensboro’s Transportation Department is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to support the maintenance and repair of the City’s street infrastructure. This role plays a critical part in ensuring safe, reliable roadways for residents, businesses, and visitors.

About the Role
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for performing general street maintenance by safely and effectively operating heavy equipment in support of roadway repair and construction activities. The primary equipment operated will be a backhoe, with additional operation of skid steers, mini excavators, and motor graders as needed.
Additional responsibilities may include:
- Driving dump trucks
- Supporting the City’s snow removal program
- Performing labor tasks such as concrete forming and finishing or asphalt-related work
- Working in and around traffic and heavy equipment while following all safety procedures
This role requires the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions, maintain good attendance, and work collaboratively as part of a street maintenance crew.
To remain in the position, the employee must:
- Obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s Permit within 30 days of employment
- Obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement within 120 days
- Maintain a reliable means of contact (home or cellular phone)
Physical & Working Conditions
- Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces
- Ability to shovel and lift up to 50 pounds
- Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions
- Exposure to traffic, noise, and heavy equipment

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED with 1 year of experience operating heavy equipment, such as backhoes, skid steers, mini excavators, and/or motor graders
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Concrete and/or asphalt experience
- Experience reading blueprints or cut sheets
- Experience interpreting grade stakes and dig on grade
- Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License
- Tanker endorsement
