Position Summary
The PW Maintenance Technician is an entry-level position within the City’s maintenance team. Initially under close supervision incumbents perform semi-skilled maintenance work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the city's infrastructure heavy focus on streets, sidewalks, trails, and general mowing. Our Public Works Department’s goal is to provide and maintain safe streets, sidewalks, trails, and excellent public services. The work is performed under the direction of the Streets Maintenance Supervisor.
Job Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
- Cleans streets, storm drains and drainage ditches; removes debris and other obstructions as necessary
- Performs minor street repairs; pours liquid asphalt to seal street cracks; patches pot holes; assists with construction of major street repairs
- Responds to emergency calls including the erection of barricades, repair of traffic signals, removal of debris to clear streets and assistance of other emergency responders
- Performs snow control operations. Snow control operations require twelve hour shifts during snow events.
- Performs various manual labor duties including cutting weeds, trimming trees, minor street excavations, placing asphalt, finishing concrete and sweeping
- Assists in repairing street and traffic lights and hangs street banners; assists in the installation, removal, and repair of traffic signs
- Performs asphalt and concrete maintenance and repair, including concrete and asphalt removal, construction and repairs on roadways, storm structures, and bridges.
- Assists in the design, layout, and painting of street and parking lot lines
- Operates light- medium- and heavy-duty equipment to complete all tasks; performs pre-operational inspections of equipment including visual inspection prior to use; performs minor maintenance and service; requests repairs as necessary
- Transports personnel and materials
- Oversees two-man crew in the absence of equipment operator including design of traffic control and completion of daily reports
- Assists in the maintenance of the Public Works Facility including painting, carpentry, and plumbing
- Prepares, completes, and maintains a variety of paperwork and documentation including daily progress reports, complaint forms, inspection forms and utility locates
- Performs general custodial duties for the Public Works Facility
- Performs safety inspections of equipment including fire extinguishers and first-aid kits
- Availability to be on call a minimum of one week a month, and for ALL snow events
Minimum Qualifications
No experience is required. High school diploma or GED and the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Ability to train and obtain a class A Driver’s License, with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Four to nine months of vocational/technical training in Street Maintenance
- One year of related experience or any combination of education or experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities
- Current possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Physical Demands
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Pay
Salary rate for this position is $20.54 hourly.
