Keep our fleet rolling. As a Public Transit Mechanic with the City Area Transit , you'll be the expert who keeps our buses and vehicles in peak condition by ensuring safe, reliable service for our daily riders. You'll work alongside a skilled maintenance team in a well-equipped facility with ongoing training and advancement opportunities.Essential Functions: 
1. Service and maintain and inspect City vehicles and equipment; complete routine servicing and tune-ups. 
2. Inspect equipment for potential mechanical problems and perform repairs; maintain records of all work completed. 
3. Diagnose mechanical problems; disassemble, inspect and make cost evaluation of repair options; confer with supervisor and offer recommendations. 
4. Maintain inventory of parts and supplies, provide budget recommendations as necessary; monitor parts inventory and confer with supervisor as to what parts to order; obtain cost-estimates; place orders and pick up parts. 
5. Perform emergency repairs and services by responding to calls for assistance in the field for vehicle and equipment repair. 
6. Assist with maintenance and repair of assigned work area; install new equipment and clean work area. 
7. Build special equipment as needed; receive and evaluate information and ideas from staff; design project and build. Perform welding as needed. 
8. Maintain detailed and comprehensive records of all work performed. 
9. Assist in testing personnel as appropriate; evaluate test results. 

Marginal Functions:
1. Assist higher level staff in writing specifications for vehicles and equipment and in obtaining prices on parts, equipment and services. 
2. Own and maintain a complete set of tools necessary to perform duties. 
3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.Knowledge: Methods, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles; Operational characteristics of a maintenance program; Methods and techniques of repair and preventive maintenance; Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions; Basic principles of welding. 

Skills: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities; Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties. 

Abilities: Perform preventive maintenance and repair a variety of mechanical problems in vehicles and equipment; Use and operate hand and power tools and mechanical equipment in a safe and efficient manner; Maintain complete and accurate records of work performed; Work independently in the absence of supervision; Perform heavy manual labor.Experience: Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of light to heavy duty motorized vehicles, equipment, and diesel mechanics. Background in minor welding fabrication preferred. 

Training: Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the mechanical trades or a related field. 

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid driver’s license. Possession of, or ability to obtain within six-month probationary period, an appropriate, valid commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Automotive Service Excellence certificate.
